“I agree, somebody always knows something.” I glance at the clock, and give a quick recap, assigning duties.

“What about the media?” Kellan asks. “They’re going to be swarming us by ten o’clock.”

“Send them to me.”

“You got it.”

I close my notebook. “Remember we need motive, means, and opportunity. We have no case without hitting all three. I need solid facts, solid information.”

Nods around the room.

“Let’s meet again at four-thirty today. Each of us should have an overload of information by then. Right now, I’m going to the morgue to check in on the autopsy.”

Kellan stands. “I’ll ride with you.”

Case 927-4 “RS”

Thatcher: Did you catch the game last night?

RS: Yeah.

Thatcher: Good, huh?

[No response.]

Thatcher: Did you see that home run at the end?

RS: Yeah.

Thatcher: What do they call that again?

RS: A grand slam.

Thatcher: That’s right. Thanks for schooling me. You know baseball better than anyone I know, you know that?

[No response.]

Thatcher: Did you watch it in the shelter’s community room?

RS: Yeah.

Thatcher: Great. I’m really proud of you. The more you hang out in there, the more comfortable you’ll be around the others. I’m really, really proud of you.

[No response.]

Thatcher: Did you visit your new school last week?

RS: Yeah.

Thatcher: Did Miss Leslie take you?
