“Sorry, Addison, I can’t take you. I’m driving Ava.”

“What?” Addison and I asked in unison, but Jack just winked at me and walked out the door.

Addison shot me a dirty look and followed him out.

I needed to talk to Hannah.

*****

I found Hannah at her locker alone, shockingly enough.

“Hey, do you have a minute?”

Hannah grinned. “I know what you’re really asking. Where is Nikolai and how much time do you have until he shows up?”

“Well, yeah, that’s pretty much it.”

Hannah laughed. “We do actually spend time apart, you know?” I rolled my eyes. Barely. “He has a class on the other side of the building, and now that I’ve assured him I can get from class to class all by myself, he has let up. Well, mostly,” Hannah added with a cheeky smile, obviously flattered by Nikolai’s attentive behavior. He’d gotten used to walking her to class when she was being essentially stalked by Jeff Connors, the principal’s son. These days, Jeff wouldn’t dare look in Hannah’s direction, let alone talk to her.

I decided to be direct. “So, what do you know about Addison and Jack?”

Hannah’s eyebrows jumped. “Addison and Jack? They aren’t together, are they?” Hannah asked in shock.

“Maybe, no, I don’t know,” I said.

Hannah’s brow puckered. “Why are you asking about them?”

“We were all just in class and Addison asked Jack to drive her to that guy Rico’s party. Do they have some kind of history?”

Hannah shut her locker and leaned against it looking thoughtful. “I don’t know. I mean, I think you’re aware, I was somewhat out of the loop, popularity wise, before getting with Nikolai,” she said self-deprecatingly. “I’ve never heard anything about them being together, but like I think they’re parents are friends. Something like that. They probably belong to the same country club, or whatever. I can ask Nikolai, he would probably know.”

“Ask me what?” Nikolai said, coming up behind Hannah, wrapping an arm around her waist and planting a kiss on her neck. She naturally turned her face to him, so he could give her mouth the same treatment, which he did.

I waited a moment, hoping this didn’t turn into anything hot and heavy, but fortunately, Nikolai’s curiosity prevailed.

“Ask me what?” he repeated.

“Do you know anything about Jack and Addison being together? Either now or before?”

Nikolai released Hannah, an uncomfortable expression drifting over his features. “There’s nothing going on between them now. Jack tends to avoid her because their families know each other, and you know how Jack feels about his family.”

I definitely knew how Jack felt about his family. “How about before?” I asked, noticing he said there was nothing going on between them now.

Nikolai shrugged and looked around, possibly searching for an exit or a fire alarm to pull. “Jack and Addison might have hooked up once, I’m not sure, I don’t keep track of all that shit.”

I shot Hannah a deadpan look, which she immediately returned, then shot the same look to Nikolai. “Really, Nik?”

Nikolai tipped his head back in apparent frustration. “Jesus, Hannah, I don’t usually talk about Jack’s business.”

Hannah crossed her arms over her chest. “Is this some kind of ‘bros before hoes’ thing?”

Nikolai barked out a laugh, walking toward her until her back was pressed into the lockers, and he was pressed into her. “Are you the ‘ho’ in this scenario, Hannah?”

She gave him a light push. “You know what I mean,” she replied in exasperation.

He stared at her for a moment. “Fuck, you are ruining me,” he muttered under his breath and gave her a hard kiss. “Okay, I think Addison and Jack might have hooked up. Once, I think. She got sort of attached, which is the only reason I know something happened, but he ignored her. When I asked him about it, he blew me off, so I figured he wanted to forget it. I think it caused major friction between Addison and Shelby because they hooked up before he got with Shelby. I think Shelby used to give Addison shit about it, taunt her with it.”

I gave him a disgusted look. “God, what a bitch.”
