Good. You are doing the right thing, Emmy.

Russia and Chicago look the same at Christmas. I was fine.

Dear Ivan,

I guess it’s the right thing to do, but I’m still curious. Anyway, I’m glad to hear you were fine at Christmas. Who do you spend the holidays with? Do you still have family over there? Does your...organization have a celebration??

I had my Christmas concert, and I could tell you spoke to Nikolai because he wouldn’t let me talk to anyone who stayed after the concert. He even mentioned the phrase “creepy dads.” You totally talked to him again, didn’t you?

Sincerely,

Emmy

Yes.

Dear Ivan,

I knew it! He was so over the top and he must have told Hannah because she was just as bossy as he was about it! A part of me likes talking to people who enjoy my music, but I have to admit, I was the littlest bit relieved to avoid the creeps.

Sincerely,

Emmy

Dear Ivan,

I’m so glad it’s finally feeling like spring! Me and some of my friends brought our instruments down to the lakefront and had a jam session there—it was SO fun. It’s a massive hassle dragging a huge harp around so I usually just bring the small one or an autoharp. I’ve attached a pic of me and the rest of the group. I wore shorts and a halter top because it initially seemed so warm, but god, I was freezing by the time we left there!

I hope it’s warmer in Moscow, too.

Sincerely,

Emmy

You look so different in this picture, Emmy. You look…mature. Who the fuck is the guy holding the clarinet with his arm around you? Are you dating him?

I like seeing you smile. You deserve to be happy.

Ignore that last email—too much vodka
