"Daddy!"

I quickly turn to the backseat, struggling to shake the memory of my one-night stand from my brain.

"What's that, dear?"

"When's the nanny toming?"

"Coming," I correct her with a smile. "As soon as we get home, pumpkin."

"Yay!"

I should text the nanny.

With that, she returns to her tablet and continues crushing candies. I turn back around and look ahead. I can feel Luke turning to look at me, but I avoid his glance.

"What happened that night?"

"What night?" I play dumb, even though I know exactly what he's talking about.

"You know exactly what night I'm talking about."

I chuckle to myself. We've been friends for so long that we can almost read each other's minds.

"I went to get a drink, and you disappeared. I didn't see you till morning." He leans to my side but keeps his hands on the wheel. "Did you get some ass? Is that what happened?"

"Wouldn't you like to know?" I smile; the suspense is killing him, and I love it.

We finally make it into town. Luke cruises through, his eyes taking in the sights. He doesn't look impressed; if anything, he seems bored. Ruby plants her face against the window and takes in the sights.

"Dad!" Ruby suddenly squeals as she points out the window. "A puppy! Can I have one?"

It's a little German Shepherd casually strolling around without its owner. "I'll think about it, baby."

I take out my phone and text the lady who had applied to be Ruby's nanny.

Hey, we're still on for the interview today, yeah?

The swoosh tells me the message has been delivered. She texts back almost immediately:

Yes, Mr. Jackson. I'm already in town. I look forward to meeting you and Ruby soon.

I click my phone off.

After what feels like an eternity, the car screeches to a halt, and we step out.

"It's a little much, isn't it?" I have to bend my back to see the top of the building.

"It's a lot much."

The building belongs to one of the founding families of New Brooks—at least, it used to. I bought it two months ago when I decided to come to town and oversee the construction project. It's an old, gothic mansion with overgrown grasses on its newly painted red walls. The compound has a pool, but I made sure it's been drained before moving out here. The mansion has too many rooms for me and Ruby.

"Be careful, Ruby." My daughter runs around the enormous compound, exploring the nooks and crannies of the area.

"I'll be careful, Daddy!" She screams back.

I watch her run around. Maybe I should get her the puppy she wants. At least she'll have a friend to run around with.

"The place has been set up, yeah?" Luke asks, his hands in his pockets.
