Guess he’s a man of few words. He doesn’t even smile.

“Sure thing. Right here. Dimitri Kuznetsov and Donovan Candlish.” I smirk as I hand it out to him.

It slips out of my hand as he grabs it, looking at it closely before running his finger down the clipboard. He pulls the pen out of its holder and crosses two names off.

“You’re free to enter. Cocktails are available while you mingle with the other guests until the event begins.” He takes hold of the door handle, pulling it open and letting us enter.

We follow the sounds of the music until we step into the main area. It’s dimly lit and men and women are scattered throughout. The whole place is decorated, reminiscent of an ancient Victorian aesthetic, and I dig it.

“See anyone you want to talk to, Donny boy? Any of these women could be our girl.”

He looks around the room, his eyes landing on an attractive woman with long blonde hair. She’s talking with two men, one of whom I know of, but not personally. His family has gained a reputation within the mafia world. I can’t help but notice how smitten the other seems to be. He can’t take his eyes off of her.

Hopefully, I don’t pull her key. I’d hate to have a war between the families because I fucked the girl he wanted.

“We might want to steer clear of her. Do you see the guy talking to her?”

“Yeah. She’s hot, but not what I want. Let’s get a drink and see who else is here. Maybe talk to a couple of people.” We move gracefully through the crowd, smiling as we head to the bar.

Moving throughout the venue are men in all black pants and matching shirts with security written across it.

Good move. You never know when someone will decide not to play by the rules.

“What can I get for you, sir?” the dark-haired man behind the bar asks.

“Two glasses of scotch, both on the rocks,” I inform him, before angling my body so I can look back out across the room.

It’s filled with beautiful women. Any man would be lucky to pull their key. But then my mind begins to wander, thinking of the reason each of the people here signed up for tonight's event.

“Why do you think everyone’s here?” I nudge Donovan’s shoulder with mine at the same time the bartender puts our drinks on the counter.

I give him a curt smile and pick up the glass, lifting it to my lips. I catch a whiff of its intense woodsy smell as I swallow the robust liquid.

Fuck, that’s some good shit.

“Hell if I know. Maybe they just want some mind-blowing sex like we do. Does it really matter, Dimitri?” Donovan asks, pushing off the bar. “Let’s get this over with and start talking to some people.”

We head for a blonde. She’s sitting on one of the couches, looking like a rabbit in a field of lions. My bet is she’s the virgin.

When we stop in front of her, she doesn’t look up, so I clear my throat. “Hello, sweetheart. I’m Dimitri and this is my best friend Donovan. How are you?”

“I’m good.” She holds out her hand and I shake it softly, noticing how soft and silky her skin feels. With the movement, a slight hint of coconut hits my nose.

“Mind if we have a seat?” Donovan asks and when she shakes her head, we sit down on either side of her.

Ten minutes later, I’m regretting my decision. We have nothing in common, and she can barely understand Donovan. That was the first black mark in her column of many. As beautiful as she is, nothing was enticing about her once she opened her mouth.

“We’ve monopolized enough of your time. We’re going to make our rounds and talk to some of the others.” I lift her hand, kissing it softly, playing the part of the gentleman. God forbid I pull her key. I don’t want her to think we’re assholes.

“Of course. Maybe I’ll see you later.” She gazes up at me, her lashes fluttering, and I pray to everything that I don’t and I get someone more my type.

We move through the crowd, stopping here and there to talk to some of the guests. A night of no-strings sex sounds amazing, but I’m beginning to wonder if we made a mistake with this.

“Holy shit, I don’t believe it. She’s here?”

“Who?”

“The woman from the supermarket. I’ve been back there every day trying to run into her again. I even tried going at different times during the day. But she’s here.” Donovan’s whole face lights up.
