He sucks harder and my hands reach out, gripping the sheets as I clamp my legs around his head. He laughs and the vibration against my clit sends me tumbling over the edge as my orgasm hits like a MACK truck. I release a gush of fluid that floods the bed underneath me, but I’m so delirious I can’t process what just happened.

Later, I’ll deal with the humiliation that I may have just peed on Donovan’s face.

How embarrassing.

Five minutes later, once I’ve come back to planet Earth, the tears hit and Donovan wipes them off my cheeks. I just want to crawl under a rock and die.

“What’s wrong, darlin’?” His voice is so sweet, and he acts like nothing just happened, which only makes the tears fall harder. How can he be so calm?

“How can you ask that? You know what happened.” I turn my head, not able to look at him.

I know he’s only pretending to not know what happened to save the embarrassment for both of us. I don’t think I can ever look at his face again. I have to get him out of here as fast as possible, so I don’t have to.

“Alex, sweetheart, talk to me,” he pleads, placing his hand on the side of my face, tilting my head to look him in the eye.

“I peed on you!” I sob, hiding my face.

But when he laughs, my embarrassment turns to anger. How dare he find humor in this situation. I’m mortified and he’s laughing. What a fucking asshole.

“You’re laughing.” I cry in outrage.

“Aye, because you’re so goddamn cute. You didnae pee, darlin’, you squirted. You made my fantasy come true. Dimitri’s gonnae be jealous as fuck when he finds out.”

“I didn’t pee? I squirted? That’s a real thing?” My eyes go wide in disbelief.

“Fucking right it is.” He slams his lips on mine, kissing me deeply as he grips my hip with his fingers. I almost come undone from that alone.

“Alex, can you join me in my office, please?” Captain Olsson asks as I walk past him, coming in for my shift today.

“Of course, Captain, just let me put my bag in my locker and I’ll be right there.”

I hurry to the locker room and put my shit away, nervous about why he needs to see me. Hopefully, Antoine didn’t mention what happened at the store yesterday. Oh no, did Lionel go to him and tell him about Dimitri’s family, lying to make it seem worse than it is?

My heart is racing and my hands are shaking as I step up to his door, lifting my hand and knocking.

“Come in,” is shouted from the other side. Here’s go nothing. Taking hold of the handle, I take a deep breath and turn the knob, opening the door and stepping inside. “Alex, please shut the door behind you and take a seat.”

“Yes, sir.” Nervous energy courses through my body as I sit down in the chair across from him. “You needed to speak to me?”

“I did. It’s about the arsonist. I wanted to let you know we had another fire that fit his MO last night. Unfortunately, he got sloppy, and this one had fatalities. Some of the homeless population still inhabited it. There were three deaths and fourteen injuries in their attempts to get out.”

My heart plummets. No! Why get sloppy now? What changed?

“Normally, I wouldn’t be sharing, but you have good instincts, and I feel you have a future as a fire and arson investigator. All your intuition has been spot on with this case, and I wanted your feedback.” He pulls out a file and lays a series of pictures out on his desk. I don’t have to ask if they're from the fire; I know they are.

One by one, I slowly go through them, Captain Olsson’s stare penetrating me the entire time. The arsonist did get sloppy. Captain keeps calling the arson a he, and I have to agree, I think it’s a man, but we can’t be sure.

It’s the last picture that pulls my attention, and I have to hold it close to my face to be sure of what I’m seeing.

“Do you have a magnifying glass so I can look closer at this one?”

He reaches into his desk and pulls one out, handing it to me. I look at the picture again, closer this time. Sure enough, there it is, right beside the gasoline containers.

A fucking lighter. Not just any lighter. One I’ve seen before.

“What time did the fire happen?”

“It happened around three thirty this morning? Did you see something?”
