She didn’t.

“You’re Jaxon Lawson, aren’t you?” she finally asked after they finished ordering. She was lingering by the table instead of fetching their drinks.

Jaxon pressed his lips together in an effort to look stoic and humorless. “Yep. That’s me.”

“You used to go out with my sister. Do you remember? Amanda? I’m her younger sister.” She pointed to her nametag that was currently situated over her left breast.

He glanced down at it briefly and then back up again. “Mindy, yeah. I remember your sister.”

“She’s gone off to university now, but I’m-”

“Working here, yeah. Looks like… quite a place.” He smiled again tersely and handed over his menu and Teagan’s. “Nice to catch up, but I think my girlfriend ordered a lavender cream-”

“Yeah, I remember,” she said, swallowing hard as she turned. He almost felt badly for her, but it wouldn’t do to have their server, who seemed at the oldest, barely out of high school, throwing herself at him.

Teagan was looking at him with barely concealed mirth when he finally ventured to look up at her. “What?” he asked.

“Nothing,” she squeaked, shaking her head. “Just watching you utterly obliterate that poor girl.”

“Oh, come on, Teags. I had no idea who she was.”

“You don’t remember her sister? Amanda, was it?”

“I remember Amanda,” he said, waving her off. “She was someone a long time ago. In my past, you might say.”

She sniffed. “Oh my goodness. You’re not ashamed, are you?”

“Of having been the Winter Town mattress for a few years now? Yeah, a bit!”

Teagan shrugged. “I couldn’t care less, Jaxon. You’re with me now.”

“Yes, and I promise I would never-”

“Hush, I know,” she reached over and squeezed his hand. “I know you would never. I just like teasing you.”

“I could think of better ways to do it,” he said with a sniff.

“How about instead, we play a game?”

“What sort of game?” he asked, happy for the subject change.

“A guessing one. What foreign object is Mindy going to jam into your drink?” Or do you think she’ll just pour salt in?”

“She wouldn’t do that.” he scoffed. “Servers don’t do that.”

“Yes, yes they do!” Teagan countered. “And all the more power to them. Foodservice workers put up with a lot from the likes of us. Even without completely dashing their young hopes.”

“Hey, Teagan! She’s much too young for me.”

“I’m young,” she countered.

“Don’t start. You’re three years younger, that’s nothing.”

“When you were fifteen, I was twelve.”

“Correct, and if I’d tried to date you when I was fifteen, it would have been disgusting. Now that you’re twenty-two and I’m twenty-five, not so much.”

“She’s cute,” Teagan said, spying Mindy as she hurriedly tried to take another table’s order. “Her makeup is lovely. How do these girls do that with the eyeliner? I’m going to ask.”
