“You don’t have to say anything just now. I’m not finished.” And with that, she continued with her tale. “I saw what they were doing, and I knew I’d let it go too far. But when I asked him to leave, he just laughed at me.”

“Cocaine!” Cassandra fumed. “On my mother’s-”

Teagan raised her voice a bit to drown out her mother. “They were high, all of them, and I did the only thing I could think to do… I left. I went to the university library and called Jaxon.”

“I just… cocaine is a hard drug, Teagan Emma.”

Oh God, she’d middle-named her.

“I’m pretty sure we got most of it off,” Jaxon drawled, which either shocked Cassandra into silence or something far more frightening.

“Why’d you call Jaxon?” Brad asked, having been deep in thought. “I mean, I was there with him, even. Why didn’t you call me?”

“You were drunk,” she stated.

“Still. I mean, I was always kind of put off you called Jaxon over me, but I thought it was because he was your boyfriend… now that I know he wasn’t, I’m more than a little put off, Teags.”

“I didn’t call you because…” Teagan said, taking a deep breath. “Because I know what you’d have done. And I feared Eric and his… people. I didn’t want you or Dave getting hurt.”

“So you called Jaxon? Because it’s okay if he gets hurt?” Brad sounded offended, and that was what Teagan was afraid of all along.

“I called Jaxon because he’s dealt with Eric before,” she answered.

“Well….” Brad began, but Britt placed her hand on his arm and he seemed to melt under her touch. He pulled back. “Well, that makes sense, I suppose. I’d have just run in drunk off my ass and gotten myself hurt or worse…”

“Was this the night you borrowed my car to go help Teagan? Was this that time?” Dave asked, frowning.

“Yeah, that was it. You were parking me in. And you were deep in the booze. It was a Thursday,” Jaxon said with a smirk.

“Hey, he’s useless on Thursday Nights,” Andrea agreed, nodding.

“So you called Jaxon and he what? Came over and saved the damn day? Slayed the dragon and you rode off together in the sunset?” Brad asked.

Teagan rolled her eyes. “No, he…” she trailed off. Because she didn’t know what he had done. “He…”

“What’d you do?” Brad asked, turning to Jaxon, who turned red and started rubbing the back of his neck.

“It’s not important. He left,” Jaxon said. Except Teagan knew enough about him to not only question that voice, but call bullshit on it, too.

“No, I’d like to know as well…” she said, turning to face him. “I mean, you’ve never told me… and in the interest of full disclosure…”

“What she doesn’t even know?” Shea asked. “I got to know what the fuck you did now.”

“I just…” Jaxon took a deep breath. “Drove up in Dave’s car and turned on the lights to make him think the cops were there… and they ran off.”

Teagan’s eyes widened.

“Fuck!” Shea grinned. “That’s possibly the coolest thing you’ve ever done!”

“Jaxon!” Teagan exclaimed. “That’s illegal!” He gave her a look that said he knew that already, but she still couldn’t believe it. “No, that’sreallyillegal! You impersonated an officer! You impersonated Dave!”

“And that’s why I didn’t want to tell you. It had to be like that. I had to get him to leave. If I’d gone up and shown my face, it’d have been a whole other game altogether, and I wasn’t in the mood.” He sniffed. “Anyway, it got him to leave.”

“You impersonated an officer of the City Patrol?” Dave said. “And it worked.” He nodded. “Okay then. Carry on.”

Teagan paused for just a moment, allowing what Jaxon had done to sink in. If he’d been caught… if Eric had found out… hell, he’d have…

She glanced over at Jaxon and squeezed his hand. His eyes met hers and she stared into them for long enough that Shea started coughing.
