“I think he just sent the text to me.”

“He asked methroughyou?” She laughed a little. “That’s what I have to look forward to, then? I’m no longer his sister, just your current flavor?”

Jaxon chuckled. If she thought she was ever just a flavor, she was sadly mistaken. Not that he was considering the possibility of the two of themactually… or anything. He was banking off the few kisses they’d already shared. If she kissed likethatwhen she didn’t mean it, well… He wasn’t sure why she wasn’t with someone. Those lips were Batton Hills best-kept secret.

You’re not a flavor, Teags. You’re a full taste at least.

Her eyebrows went up. “Oh really?”

Shit. He’d said that aloud. Fuck.

He laughed and reached up to scratch the back of his head. “Well yeah.At least.” Because playing up those words was what would save him here. God, help him.

“At least?” her eyes were dancing and Brad was waiting for an answer, and Jaxon wasn’t ready to explain what a taste was, and he just knewthatwould be the next question to pass her lips.

“Absolutely,” he laughed. “The bar? You want to go out?”

“Sure, sounds fun,” she said, her eyes narrowing as she stared his way, trying to figure out what he’d meant, as if it were painted right there on his face.

Good luck,he thought to himself. If it’s written there, read it aloud and share it with the class, Teagan. Because I sure as fuck don’t know what I meant.

He turned from the room, his cheeks blazing as he sent back an affirmative response to Brad.

His friend must have been anxious about their reply because he answered back almost immediately.

Brad: Thank the God. I invited Britt, and I didn’t want her to feel awkward.

Jaxon: You mean YOU didn’t want to feel awkward.

Brad: That too. Hammer at 8?

“Hammer at eight?” Jaxon called into the other room.

“That’s fine,” Teagan sing-songed.

He sent back a thumbs-up emoji and left it at that. A quick glance at the time told him he still had a bit of time to go to the home improvement store and then back to his house to his difficult basement. Plus, it would get him out of this apartment, where he’d given Teagan a very unfortunate compliment.

Well, unfortunate wasn’t the right word, but…

He needed to get some distance and work the kinks out of his brain after living near her for too long or something.

He reentered the room once he was sure he’d collected himself. “So, I have to run by the home improvement store and pick up another valve before it closes. Then I have to go to the house and make sure it’s the right one… shouldn’t take any longer than a half an hour or so… you want to just meet at Hammer?” he asked.

She raised her eyebrows. “No way am I getting stood up by my fake boyfriend,” she countered.

“What? I’ll be there. I just have to do a thing first. Adulting, you know? It’s the latest craze.” He shot her a grin, and she shot one back at him.

“Plus, if we’re dating, we’d show up together,” she continued as if he hadn’t said anything at all. “I’ll just come along with you.”

“Nah, maybe you shouldn’t I-”

“You’re going to the home improvement store, buying a part and taking it by your house…” she said. “Half an hour, right?”

“Well, I was going to just kind of pop it in place before I went to the bar. Just to put my mind at ease. You know?” He tried to grin at her, but it wasn’t working.

She sighed. “So, you were going to be late? Fuck that, Jaxon. I’ll be late too. I’m coming with you.”

He sighed. “Suit yourself. I suppose I’ll run to the store and I’ll circle back around and you can hop on?”
