So, this was why Ronin had made him get a motorcycle license last year. He was going to force Jace to join his stupid club.

He was under no illusions that he’d be paying for that bike. One way or the other.

He walked closer and when Ronin stepped away from the bike, he looked it over. It wasn’t in bad shape. In fact, it looked quite good. He wasn’t sure why he was surprised. Ronin would’ve been embarrassed if his brother had a shitty bike.

“Thank you,” he said.

“Let’s take her for a spin,” Ronin said, then turned and called for his friends who were all still inside the house.

Three guys he wished he’d seen much less of over the years came walking down the path, two of them shoving each other playfully while the last one was glaring at Jace. Talon always glared. He was the first of Ronin’s friends he’d learnt to steer clear off. There was a reason those two were best friends.

Jace straddled his bike and glanced at Ronin.

“Where are we going?”

Ronin gave him a look that could only mean he thought Jace was an idiot.

“Right,” Jace mumbled.

To the clubhouse it was.

CHAPTER TWO

Ares

HE DROVE up to the clubhouse and parked his bike in its usual spot. He glanced at the line of bikes taking up half the courtyard, a smile finding his lips. He wasn’t surprised to find quite a few of his brothers hanging out in front of the clubhouse. They’d brought of the lawn chairs and copious amount of beer.

One of his brothers handed a prospect a bucket and a sponge, laughing as he pointed down at his dirty boots. The prospect, Pike, dropped to his knees and got to work. Ares shook his head. As a prospect, you do as you’re told or face the consequences. It ensured that only the ones who really wanted this life would get in.

Club life wasn’t for everyone, but he’d always loved it. He’d been lost in his younger days and when he’d joined the Henchmen, he’d found purpose. He’d found family. Things he’d never had before.

There were aspects of the club he didn’t enjoy, but that was life he supposed. Sometimes you had to compromise.

He headed toward his brothers, catching the beer Diesel threw his way.

“Thanks,” he said, popping open the lid and taking a drink.

Skinner gave him a fleeting glance. They were steering clear of each other. He’d run into him in a place neither should’ve been. While he was bi and made it work at the club, sometimes he just needed to stick his dick in something other than pussy. He didn’t know what Skinner’s deal was and he wasn’t about to ask. He knew neither of them would ever speak of it and even then, he knew he had to be more careful. There were plenty of guys in the club who would beat him to death if they found out. It was why he stayed close to a particular few. He had his suspicions about them which was why he kept them close.

Ronin waved him over and it wasn’t until he got closer that he noticed a man he didn’t know standing almost behind Ronin. When he looked up at Ares, he realized that he was more a kid than a man.

He had green eyes with a mix of gold and brown in them. There was a cautious look in those eyes as they tracked across Ares’ face. When their gazes connected, he felt a jolt of awareness shoot through him. There was something broken in those eyes. Fear crawling at the edges. The kid was scared shitless.

“This is my brother,” Ronin said, slapping a hand against the kid’s back and pushing him toward Ares.

The boy extended his hand and said, “I’m Jace.”

He shifted his beer to his left hand.

“Ares.”

The second his hand was in Jace’s, something happened between them. It was like an electrical shot straight to the heart. Jace held on tight and not because he was squeezing hard. It was like he was clinging to Ares as if he was his only lifeline.

Something didn’t sit right with him as he stared into Jace’s eyes. Something hadn’t been right since Ronin joined the club.

“My baby brother here is gonna be prospecting once he graduates,” Ronin said, clamping a hand down on Jace’s shoulder and making him jerk his hand out of Ares’.

Jace winced but didn’t move, like an animal that knew it’d been caught. He was in freeze mode because he likely knew there was no use in running.
