I slid forward and reached for the edge of the desk that felt like a deliberate buffer she’d placed between us.“What is it?”

“There is a spell to lift a curse like you’re talking about. It’s complicated and pretty full on.But I’d be willing to try it.”She looked up, with a satisfied smile on her face.

I steeled myself for the next words about payment, but they didn’t come.

I glanced at Mason, who in turn looked at Tania and said, “That’s the other reason we’ve put this off finding a witch for so long. We’ve been told the payment for such a spell would be more than we could afford. But we’ve both been saving money, we have property…”

Hell, we had two livers, four kidneys… whatever she needed. We’d hand them all over if it meant getting our parents back.

Her eyes widened, then she cracked another huge grin.“I don’t charge for my magic.”

It was our turn to be shocked.“You don’t?No.That’s impossible.”

She laughed, and once again, the sound was music to my ears.“I’ve never had anyone hire me to do a spell for them.I wouldn’t even know what to charge.”

I looked around the room. She owned this business, so she probably owned the building too.She didn’t need money.Or did she?

I sat up straight, willing to put an offer on the table even though Mason and I had agreed we would be careful what we said in this regard.“Whatever you think is fair, Tania. We’ll pay it.Anything.”

“Anything?”She sounded interested.

I nodded.“Yes.Anything.”I wasn’t scared of what she would ask for.She didn’t seem like the type of woman who would take for the sake of taking.

She tilted her head as though considering something strange, then shook herself.“No.I don’t want anything.”

“Do you need more people in the gym?”Mason offered.“We can promote you to all the shifter groups.Or if you want cash, we have cash.”

He pulled out his wallet and lay it on the table, something else we’d promised not to do.

The wallet was bulging with cash, and although Tania probably didn’t realize that all of the notes were one-hundred-dollar bills, the thickness of the wallet was still impressive.

Tania sighed.“You both need to know that I might not succeed with this spell. If I’m not strong enough… or if something goes wrong…”

Mason hastened to say, “The fact you’re willing to try, is more than enough for us.”

“I’ll tell you what.”Her smile softened.“If my dad likes you, the spell’s free.”

I blinked at her. That was the weirdest request ever.

“And if he doesn’t?”I asked.

She shrugged.“If I succeed in getting your parents back… you can join the gym, both of you, and pay your fees, just like everyone else.”

Her generosity made my heart ache.

I opened my mouth to thank her, and she put her hand up, effectively silencing me.“Don’t thank me yet, I haven’t done anything except agree to try.”

I nodded and stood up, extending my hand out to her.“And I thank you for being willing to try, for meeting with us.”

She eyed my hand like I might be holding a buzzer or something equally juvenile, then stood up and shook it.

Tingles of awareness shot up my arm and I had to lock my knees so I didn’t stumble.

Stop being a pussy.Harden up.

She turned to shake Mason’s hand, then we thanked her again, and left. She didn’t follow us.In fact, she closed the office door behind us.

I managed to get out of the gym, and onto the footpath before my wolf shifter howled to the sky.“I need to run.”
