I shrugged.“Don’t know.Sixty seconds, maybe?”

Her smile was contagious.“You’re getting faster.”

“And you’re late,” I told her, glancing up at the clock.“Dani’s been here for ages.”

She swiped her card and hurried through the door.“Shit.Thanks!”

I turned to watch as she rushed off to meet with Dani, a client who’d started her routine without Jaydy.

They exchanged some words, including what I had to assume was an apology from Jaydy for being late.I couldn’t hear a thing with George’s chosen music pumping over the speakers.

I chuckled to myself and got back to work.By the time my shift was done, I was exhausted. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to train.

George was packing up and Jaydy was long gone.

“You know I can stay.Spot you?”George said, zipping up his bag.His face dripped with sweat. He’d been here three hours already.

“Nah.You know I’m all good.”I waggled my eyebrows at him.My magic wouldn’t allow me to get hurt, and he knew it.“See you tomorrow?”

He nodded.“Yeah.Competition’s in four weeks. No time to slack off now.”

I waved goodnight to him, followed him to the entrance and locked the front door. One thing I’d never gotten truly comfortable with, was letting people watch me train.

Or compete.

Despite ten years of training, wishing, and dreaming, I was yet to follow through with my first competition. It was foolish, I knew. But every time I got close, something stopped me.

Fear of failure, perhaps?Of being seen for who I truly was?

I didn’t really know, but I’d given up trying to understand. And my friends had given up trying to talk me into competing.

I got into my training session, loving the burn in my muscles as I pushed through the weights. My heart pounded and sweat ran down my face.

When I was most of the way through the session, the pain began to ease, and then stopped.A wave of ecstasy flowed over me.The endorphins kicking in, big time.

Better than drugs.Better than sex.

Especially considering my limited experience with both.

I finished the session on a natural high, then cleaned up and put all my weights away.My legs were shaking from the stress of finishing some killer squats, but luckily I didn’t live far from the gym.In fact, I lived above it.I could practically hear my shower upstairs calling me from where I stood.

I trudged to my office, a small room at the back of the huge warehouse that held a desk, an old computer, and contained the spiral stairwell that led up to my apartment on the next level.

I’d worked hard to build this business when I first started and bought the building a few years ago, converting the rooms on top of the gym into a cozy home for myself.

My right foot had just hit the first step of the spiral staircase when I heard a loud knocking at the front entrance.

I frowned at the sound. This was an industrial area.I rarely saw anyone on the streets past six p.m.Except those going to one of the two gyms.Mine and the fluffy pink one.

Mine was clearly closed.

I decided to ignore the knocking and took another step up the stairs, only to have the sound intensify.

Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.

Whoever it was, didn’t want to take no for an answer.I groaned loudly and rolled my eyes. But I couldn’t ignore the urgency evident in the sound.

I was sweaty and hungry and very quickly becoming hangry.I stomped to the front door, preparing to blast whoever it was with a few choice words.I flicked on the main lights as I went.Between my magic and my boxing skills I could handle most threats that came to my door. But it still helped to be able to see who I may need to fight.
