ChapterEight

MASON

My jaw remained clenched so tight, my teeth ached. And my wolf vibrated within my chest, anxious and desperate to jump free.“I am so fucking sick of waiting.”

I’d found my mate and I couldn’t even go and see her or talk to her.And God, did I want to do more than just talk to her.I wanted to ravish her.Strip her down and devour her.

Leo, the bloody sloth, laughed at me from his place on the couch.“We’ve found the witch to save Mom and Dad, and she wants no money? It’s a bloody miracle. After years of saving every cent and waiting for the day someone would want to help us, we should be celebrating, Mason. Not fucking bitching.”

I growled at my brother and hauled myself out of the old recliner I sat in.We’d done everything we could over the last ten years, to make money to help our parents. We bought old houses and did them up, sold them for a profit.

We saved money like our lives depended on it, because our parents’ lives actually did.

We both had old cars and ancient furniture—and not the expensive kind.We crammed ourselves into a tiny townhouse and didn’t bother renovating it because we were too busy working to pay off the mortgage.

“I can’t believe we don’t need the money we got told we did!”I paced the tiny room, feeling claustrophobic.

We had a fucking fortune in the bank, ready to buy our parents their freedom. And the only witch who would agree to help us wanted us to join her gym for a couple hundred bucks a year?

It was elating. But I couldn’t fully enjoy that development, because my wolf was howling to go fetch my mate. His mate.Ourmate.

That was the most frustrating thing of all.I did not want to share my mate with my brother. But it looked as if fate had a different take on my future than I’d had.

Leo picked up his phone and started scrolling, obviously needing a brainless activity to occupy him.“So, we have money. We can send Mom and Dad on a world trip now, or buy them a nice house to retire in.When they’re human again. We can help them properly.”

I flopped down into the old recliner again, the springs creaking in protest.“Yeah.I suppose.”Leo was right.I should be jumping for joy, but instead, my skin itched to be scratched right off.

I jumped out of the chair again, unable to sit still.“I’ve gotta go and see her.”

Leo was on his feet faster than a whip.“I’m coming with you.”

“Oh, so you’re not as relaxed as you’re pretending to be.”It was my turn to laugh at him.

Leo stretched his neck and cracked his knuckles.“Hell no.My wolf is dying to go get our mate.”

There it was again. The phrase, ‘our mate’, grated on me.My wolf wanted his own mate, not to share one with my brother. But I also couldn’t begrudge my brother his happiness. Not unless Tania chose one of us over the other. Then Leo and I might have words.

We loaded into the truck. It was after dinner and the sun was beginning to set.I glanced at my watch.“It’s almost eight.Do you think her gym will still be open?”

Leo grabbed his cell phone, scrolled for a moment, then said.“It closes at nine.Let’s go.”

We sped down the street, away from the shifter side of town and toward the industrial zone where her gym was housed. The area was mostly inhabited by humans.

The gym had a few parking spots out the front but most were taken. We grabbed the only one available.

I turned off the engine and placed both hands on the steering wheel, my chest tight.

“What’s wrong?”Leo asked, having already opened his door to jump out.

I felt like I was paralyzed in the strangest way.“I don’t know. It’s just…” I stopped, not even sure how Icouldexplain the maelstrom of emotions coursing through me.

Did he not feel the same way as me?

Leo chuckled, then whacked me in the chest, startling me.“Come on, man.Things can’t get worse.”

I wasn’t so sure about that.Leo and I had been kind of frozen in place for a long time.Neither of us had committed to any sort of serious relationship. We’d done nothing but save money, working toward freeing our parents. But that hadn’t left much time or effort for anything else.

“Mase!”Leo yelled at me, getting out of the car, then thumping the roof.“Let’s go.”
