They needed my help with the spell, and once they got what they wanted, I was pretty sure I’d never see them again.

When I finally opened the door, I gaped at how empty the gym had become.

It wasn’t quite closing time yet. What was going on?I narrowed my eyes on a corner of the room and realized everyone was standing in a circle, watching a competition.

I stepped out of my office just as Mom arrived. She rushed over and grabbed onto my arm, like she often did.“What’s happening?”she asked.

“I’m not sure,” I answered honestly.“I left Dad with the wolf brothers, then went into the office.”

Mom stiffened a little as though getting ready for a fight.“They’re still here?”

I nodded my head.“Yeah.Come meet them.”

We walked, together, over to the training station where everyone was standing around.

As I got closer, I wasn’t surprised to see Dad at the center of the excitement. He was standing over the two wolf shifters, who were sweating and grunting as they pushed huge weights in a squat.

“Is that them?”Mom whispered.

I nodded.“Yep.”

Dad was counting each squat, encouraging them, yelling at them, mocking them for groaning when he added more weight.

I added up the pounds they were both lifting, quickly estimated their body weights, and was shocked at the result. They’d win almost any lifting competition they competed in, and if their flat abs and bulging biceps were anything to go on, they’d be competitive in a body builder competition, too.

Having both ‘go’ and ‘show’ was rare.Very rare. And they both had it.

Mom gasped.“Your dad likes them.”

“How do you know?”I whispered.

“Look at his face, his posture. The way he’s pushing them.He only does that when he thinks the person has potential. He wouldn’t waste his time, otherwise.”

Looking back on my own childhood, I had to agree with her.

Sweat poured off Leo and Mason. They were red and hurting, that was for sure.

Leo began to tip to one side and called out.“Jack!”

Dad grabbed the bar with one hand, then raced around behind Leo to ease the bar from his shoulders.

Leo groaned and stepped forward, staggering, then stood straight, a huge smile splitting his face.

Dad clapped him on the back.“Well done.”

Mason was still standing, though he shook with strain. He was the older brother, and now that I looked at him, it was obvious. He was slightly larger, the lines around his eyes more defined.

“You done?”Dad asked him.

Mason groaned.“One more.”

Dad nodded and got behind him and called out.“Fifty.”

Mason went down in a perfect squat and pushed up, his thighs shaking as he grunted out his pain.

The group around us called out and clapped as Dad took the bar from Mason, and the older brother fell forward, Leo catching him in a sweaty hug.

My heart squeezed tight, seeing their comradeship.Being an only child, I’d missed out on a sibling relationship. From what I could tell, it could be strained, and outright violent at times. But the loyalty that ran between these brothers was clearly bone deep. And I was truly envious of people who made a blood bond like that work.
