She smiled at me.“I love being surrounded by my books. Some magical, of course.Others literary.Romance.Adventure.Everything.You know me.”

I definitely got my love of books from my mom.

She called me closer with a wave of her hand.“Come look at this spell. The one you found is good, but I think this one might be useful to assess the wolves first.See if we can simply lift the curse in a more gentle manner, rather than force it.”

I inclined my head over the pretty oak desk at which she was seated, and stared down at the spell. The incantation was complex, like most of the spells my mom liked. But if it worked, it would definitely save the wolves from extra stress.

“I’ll bow to your knowledge on this one.Looks like a great spell to try.”

Mom stared at me, her lips curled down at the edges.“It’s a powerful spell, sweetheart.Would you like me to ask Aunt Maggie to help us?”

Aunt Maggie was Mom’s sister.A classic skinny bitch, but a powerful witch.

We didn’t get along.

I shook my head.“No, Mom.I’ve been working on my spells and have improved quite a lot.”Understatement of the century.“I can handle this with your help.”

In fact, I was pretty sure, with my newfound power, I could handle it alone, but since Mom wanted to help, I was going to let her.She had a lot more experience than me.

Mom’s eyes widened.“Tania, I know you think you can do this spell, but…”

I rolled my eyes.“Test me if you don’t believe me.Give me a spell to do, Mom.A hard one.”

Her jaw dropped.“You’re serious?”

I nodded.I knew she worried about me not having enough magic. She was hesitating because she didn’t believe me about being strong. Then I remembered the necklace.“Oh!I made something for you the other day.Let me bring it here.”

I closed my eyes and envisioned where I’d hidden the necklace, in a drawer in my dresser. Then I pushed my magic to transport the heavy necklace into my hands.

It was so effortless, fear rippled through me that I’d failed.Just as Mom had expected.

When I opened my eyes, I stared down at my hands. My mom’s gold necklace glistened in my palms.“Wow.It worked.I’m still getting used to this feeling.”

Mom gaped at me.“What feeling?”

I grinned at her.“Magic being easy.”

Mom reached out her hand, slowly. When she touched the necklace I’d made for her, she jumped.“Whoa.It’s real.”

A laugh bubbled up in my throat.“Yeah, it is.I wanted to test myself the other day, and metalsmithing was always my biggest weakness at school. So here you go.I made this for you.”

Like a kid at kindergarten, I handed over the necklace I’d made. But instead of being made with macaroni, the jewel I’d set in the gold for my mom was a large emerald. She took it with tears in her eyes.“Tania… How?”

Should I tell her about Harry?About the genie spell that he’d succeeded in achieving but had died as a result?

Emotions tightened my chest and I wasn’t sure I could do it.I shrugged.“It’s a long story.”

Mom gave me the side eye, then shook her head with a sigh.“Okay.I’ll leave that mystery alone for now.I can see your reluctance to share.”

But she wouldn’t leave it alone forever.I knew my mom.

“Okay. So, should I call the guys?Set up a time to do the spell on their parents?”

Mom nodded and I pulled my cell phone out.Leo’s business card had been burning a hole in my back pocket since he gave it to me.

I turned to the window and typed in his number, unable to sit down and relax. My whole body was pulsing with a nervous energy I wasn’t sure what to do with.

“H’lo?”Leo’s happy voice came barreling through the phone.
