I fell onto my hands and knees, pain crushing my heart as my chest squeezed like a vice.I screamed out but there was no-one to hear me.

Everything went dark.

We were still sitting in our truck, unable to drive away from the woman we both needed.Unable to leave her, despite the last words she’d said to us.

She didn’t want us.

She didn’t believe we wanted her.

All was lost.

Tania’s scream echoed through my head.

I clasped my hands over my ears, trying to drown out the sound even as I turned to my brother and yelled, “Can you hear that?”

Leo was already jumping out of the truck and running for the front door, which we’d stupidly locked.

I grabbed the tire iron and charged for the front door in Leo’s wake.

Leo put out his hand, eyeing the tire iron.“Are you sure about that?”

I raised my arm and threw the metal bar straight through the glass door.“Absolutely.”Glass smashed loudly, littering the pavement at our feet with large shards.

I reached through the hole I’d made and unlocked the front door once more.“Let’s go.”

Tania’s scream was still ringing in my ears as I ran for her office and ascended the stairs at lightning pace.

There on the floor was a nightmare come true.My mate--ourmate—collapsed on the floor.

I rushed to kneel beside her, feeling for a pulse at the base of her throat.

“Oh my God!What happened?”Leo called out as he raced up the stairs behind me.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.“But she’s alive.”

“Should I go for help?Or should we call an ambulance?”

I checked for any signs of injury or bleeding, and couldn’t find any as I ran my hands carefully over her body.“I don’t know yet.”

There was a book lying next to her, open and crumpled.“Maybe she was doing a spell and fainted again?Like she did after she brought Mom and Dad back?”

Leo came over to stare down at the book.“This doesn’t feel the same as last time.I think we need to get help.”

I put my hand to her forehead. She was cold and clammy to the touch.“You’re right.I think we need to get her to her parents.”

Leo squatted down next to her, brushing her hair off her face.“Should we move her?Flip her over or get her up on the couch or something?”

I didn’t like seeing her laying on her belly like that, but I was afraid to do anything that might injure her.“No.I’ll stay with her.Do you think you can find her parents’ house?”

Leo’s eyebrows drew together.“Yeah.I know exactly where they are.Tania and I were talking about their renovations the other day.”

“Go,” I said.“I’ll stay here in case she wakes up.”

Leo nodded and ran for the spiral staircase, then disappeared downstairs into the gym.
