I still couldn’t believe he’d died for such a stupid reason. The genie wish was a myth, and clearly not something that was real.My poor dear Harry had died, for nothing.

ChapterThree

TANIA

Ideliberately avoided people over the next few days.I worked behind the scenes, in the office, or did the close of day or the start when it was usually quieter, not wanting to have to deal with the strain of putting on a fake positive front for my gym customers and staff.

My body ached from the lack of training, and my heart hurt for the loss of my childhood friend. My brother.

On Wednesday night, after everyone had left, I decided it was time to get back into my work outs.Nothing made me feel better, nor lifted the depression off me, like exercise. And Harry would have hated to see me moping around.

I set up my weights and got to work, pushing myself further than I normally would.Despite the fact I’d had a week off, and still wasn’t feeling like myself, the work out was easy.Too easy.

I checked the weights but I hadn’t made any errors.

Strange.

I pushed to the end of the session, my heart pounding and sweat rolling down my face.I’d put on weight the past week; I could feel it within my body already. Not that I cared about my size, but it was the loss of muscle that I wasn’t happy about.

When I was finished, I cleaned up and put everything away.

I was exhausted, so instead of doing my normal ‘human style’ lock up, I flicked my hand toward the front door, aiming to lock it using my magic.I wasn’t sure my powers would extend that far, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try.

The door locked, with a loud click, the curtains rolled down, and the lights in the front half of the warehouse flicked off.

My jaw dropped.Sure, that was what I’d planned to do next, but there was no way I’d have thought I could do it with just my magic.

I stood up, and with a shaking hand, waved my fingers over a dumb bell I’d left at my feet, telling it to go back to its place on the rack.

I watched in awe as the weight flew up to where it should go and nestled in neatly with the other weights.

“Holy shit.”

It wasn’t possible. No way.I’d never had this sort of power before—magical or physical.

I had to test it out properly.I finished turning off all the lights in the normal, human way, and went up to my apartment for a shower.I washed my hair and took my time scrubbing the sweat from my skin, my mind awhirl with possibilities.

The genie spell that had killed Harry was powerful. But even so, surely the spell wouldn’t really have given Harry the power to impart a single wish?

If it had, and if Harry really had blessed me with the same amount of magical power, as I had strength and size… surely that meant amazing things.

I pulled on my cotton pajamas, my skin still hot from my shower, and sat on the couch in my small living room.My hands were warm and buzzing with an energy I’d never felt before.I had to know; I simply had to.

While my magic wasn’t terrible, I’d never been good at anything.I’d barely gotten through high school, thanks to almost failing the classes in spells and potions. But what was I truly dreadful at?

The answer came to me easily.Magical jewelry-making.

To be fair, that wasn’t just me, it was pretty much everyone at my school.Anyone who wasn’t meant to be a craftsman, or metalsmith, couldn’t make jewelry the magical way.It just wasn’t done.

Only three people had passed metal-smithing class, and they all went on to become jewelers.

“What do I need in the way of jewelry?”I asked aloud, rubbing my hands together.I rarely wore jewelry of any sort.No rings or necklaces, and I only kept a pair of gold studs in my ears so the holes wouldn’t close up.

My mother had pierced them when I was three years old because she loved sparkles.I’d never had the heart to let them go completely, even though I still never changed out the gold for the sparkles Mom had always wanted for me.

“Something for Mom, then.”I smiled at the thought. My mother deserved the best of everything.

I closed my eyes and put my hands out, stretching and wiggling my fingers to let the magic flow.In my mind I could see a gorgeous gold necklace.Mom’s favorite color was green, so I imagined a large emerald centerpiece, hanging off a sturdy gold chain.
