I shouldn’t.But there was something about her, about this situation, that had my mind racing. My subconscious was scrolling through the archives of memory.I just knew I had some information about this situation and my brain was looking for a clue to the answer.

“I don’t know… it’s just…” Then it hit me.

Tania.Sue.Their conversation that day!

“You’re the witch who turned our parents into wolves!”

Mason growled at her but I only stared.I should have been angrier to be face to face with our family’s nemesis, but I was more relieved to have worked out the puzzle inside my own head.

“You’re the ancient they were scared of upsetting by lifting the spell,” I went on, figuring that the witch already had us tied to a chair. If she’d wanted to kill us, she would have done so already. Now that I had an idea of who she was, hopefully we had a chance of getting out of here alive.

The witch hobbled over to me, leaning on her walking stick and staring at me with shrewd eyes.“You’re too quick by half, aren’t you, boy?”

I laughed a little, sounding nervous even though I hadn’t meant to.“Ah… not usually. You must have caught me on a good day.”

She glanced over at Mason.“This one got the brawns, and no brains.”

Mase glared at her with the heat of a thousand suns, but she wasn’t fazed by him.

I tried not to snigger, but it wasn’t easy.“Ah no.Mase is all heart as well.”

“Hmm… let’s see, shall we?”She lifted her left hand and moved her arm toward Mason.

He began to groan, fighting his restraints as his body began to vibrate.

“What are you doing?”I cried.“Don’t hurt him! He’s done nothing to you!”

Mase moaned, then cried out as sweat beaded on his forehead.

“Stop!”I screamed at her.“Please!”

She dropped her arm and turned back to me, seemingly unfazed.“He does have a good heart. You tell the truth.”

Mase hung his head, panting hard.

I wanted to call out to him and ask if he was okay, but I didn’t want her attention back on my brother.I needed to keep her focused on me.

“I do,” I declared.“Ask me anything.”

She narrowed her eyes and stepped closer.“How is it that my spell was broken?Who did it?”

I considered her question for a moment, and whether or not I wanted to tell her the truth.Would Tania be able to hold her own against this type of witch?Probably not.Sue had been terrified of going up against the ancient, and for good reason, it seemed.

Should I lie, or refuse her the truth?Would we die here? And if we did, would Tania then be safe?

Seemed like a good bet to me.

The witch pointed a crooked finger at me.“Lie, boy, and I’ll kill your brother.”She nodded at Mase, then looked back at me.

I inhaled sharply. She would, and it was obvious that she could.

I didn’t have much choice, but I’d do everything I could to protect Tania.

“Our fated mate broke the curse on our parents,” I answered honestly.“Her mother didn’t want to help. She was afraid of you.But our mate is a good woman, a kind woman, and she couldn’t handle us suffering any longer.”

“Suffering?”The woman gaped at me.“It wasn’t your sacred grounds that were destroyed the day those shifters came here.”

I blinked at her, not sure which way to go now.Should I empathize with her situation, or defend my parents?
