I decided to go with a balance of the two.“I can only imagine how offended you were, but we were barely teenagers at the time. We’ve lived without our parents for fifteen years now and we couldn’t continue that way.”

“Fifteen years,” the witch repeated, her voice shocked and raspy.Maybe she hadn’t realized it’d been so long?

“Yes,” I confirmed, glancing across at Mason who was still resting with his head down.

But he was no longer red, or sweating, and seemed to be biding his time for the old witch to turn her back.

Don’t do it Mase. She’s more powerful than either of us.

“So please don’t take it out on our fated mate,” I begged her, still not giving the witch Tania or Sue’s names.“She was only trying to help.”

The witch whirled on me.“But she should never have been able to lift the spell. My magic is the most powerful magic in this country.I am an ancient. There are none stronger than me.”

She lifted her chin in defiance.

I shrugged.“I’m just a wolf shifter.I don’t know anything about magic.”

Playing dumb had long been one of my strong suits, but I could see the witch wasn’t fooled.

“You’ll tell me,” she said, pointing her long, crooked finger at me.“Or I’ll make you.”

I clenched my teeth and locked down my jaw.I wasn’t telling her who Tania was, and Mase would back me up on this decision, I just knew it.

We’d die before we put our mate in harm’s way.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

TANIA

Ipaced my living room, grasping for any straws of logic that I had, and came up with none.

“Fuck!”I stamped my foot.Where the hell were they?

Someone had taken my men right out from under my nose. And it had to be a witch, or a warlock.No-one else could have magically removed them from my apartment.

“Shit!I should have put up better wards.”

I’d never even thought to use my magic to strengthen my own security.I was a no-one in the wizarding world.Only those with things to steal had magical wards on their homes.

No matter.I had to find them. But how?Should I do a scrying spell?Or was there a way to follow the other witch’s magic to my men?

I ran downstairs and into my gym, going straight for the heaviest weights I had.I bent my knees, grabbed the huge plate at my feet, launched it up and held it above my head.

As soon as I was balanced, I did squats, pushing the blood quickly around my body, speeding up my heart and forcing my already strong body to work hard.I had to build my magic up.I needed more.

I had to find my men.Now.

Oh God.Leo… Mason… please be okay.

I threw the plate to the ground and walked over to the largest tombstone I had, hefting it off the ground with a grunt.

I pushed my arms and legs to the brink, running across the room carrying the weight, over and over again.Once I was barely able to breathe from the strain on my chest, I dropped the weightlifting equipment and staggered to a bench.

I was exhausted and seeing spots at the edges of my vision due to lack of oxygen, but my hard work had paid off.Magic was simmering in my veins, strong and sure.I waited a few moments for the blackness to recede, then hauled myself to my feet once more.

“I’m coming, don’t worry.”I jogged to my office, my legs screaming at me to stop torturing them, but I welcomed the pain of the exercise. It reminded me that I’d worked hard and my magic would be stronger because of it.

The moment I stepped onto the landing, I slid to the floor, my hands stretching out to the place where Leo had been before he disappeared. His warmth was still there, his energy.
