ChapterTwenty-Nine

MASON

Igrabbed Tania in my arms and held her tight to my chest.“Holy hell, I can’t believe you got us out of there alive.”

She squeezed me back, so hard my back cracked. Then she whispered, “I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry.”

I pulled away so I could stare down at her beautiful face, her dark eyes glistening with unshed tears.“What are you talking about? You saved us!”

“But it was my fault you were in that sort of danger.”

Leo laughed beside us, reached out and dragged Tania into his arms.“What are you talking about? It was our fault that you were pulled into danger. Our parents were the ones that had the ancient spell on them.We should be apologizing to you.”

She hugged Leo so tight she almost knocked him off his feet.“I’m just so glad you’re both okay.”

“This place is so crowded,” I said, glancing around at her tiny one-bedroom apartment.“I wish you could see the new place we bought. It needs a lot of work, of course. We don’t buy them any other way.But it’s big.”

Tania sniffed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.“Let’s go then.I want to get out of here.”

I glanced at my brother, who shrugged.“Sounds good to me.But first…”

“Yes?”Tania paused, looking at us.

“Could you put us back in our own clothing?”

Tania burst out laughing, but then waved a hand, and the strange clothing the witch had dressed us in was gone.We were back to our own shirts, jeans and boots, and I gave a sigh of relief.

We grabbed our keys and jogged down the stairs and into Tania’s gym.I took her hand in mine and a thrill of happiness passed through me.

When we walked past the place where Tania’s friend had died, she tugged on my hand so that we walked around the area. After witnessing her memories, I knew why.

Tania locked up the gym and we all jumped in our truck. My heart thumped a little faster as we drove the few minutes over to the large family home we’d bought. This was it.The beginning of the rest of our life.

“It doesn’t need a full gut,” I began to explain once we arrived and got out of the truck.“But it definitely needs a full paint job.New bathroom.New kitchen.”

She grabbed hold of my hand as we stood outside, staring up at the double-story house.“It looks great.I can’t wait to go inside.”

Leo grabbed his keys out of his back pocket and opened the front door.“Let’s do it.”

“What color do you guys like?”Tania asked.“For the walls?”

“We usually go a slight off white,” Leo said.“Quarter strength Casper, or something like that.”

Tania walked through the front door and placed her hand on the wall.“Okay, let’s do that.”

As she walked slowly down the hall, trailing her fingers over the walls, a fresh coat of paint and new, uncracked drywall followed in her wake.

I glanced over at Leo, then stared in disbelief as the renovations spread. The ugly carpet beneath our feet disappeared and polished floor boards now lay in their place.

“You guys like really modern kitchens?”Tania called from the large living room.

We bolted down the hall to join her in the kitchen.

“Ah…” Leo stared at me.

Should we let her do this?We had money, and skills. Our plans had been to build her a dream home.

But what sort of assholes would we be to refuse a gift like this?“We kinda like a mix of country cottage, and modern. You know.White shaker cabinets, marble back splash, but butcher block counters.A touch of black metal and wood.”
