It wasn’t a normal sized arrow. The base was thick and the head was as big as a normal blade, so it’d definitely done damage. The weapon was military-grade and highly specialized to inject the serum on impact. Pretty genius if I wasn’t its victim.

But the pain was agony.

With all my years of training, very few times did I get impaled by an arrow, and definitely nothing of this size. Until last week, I hadn’t even been fully impaled by anything—well, that I didn’t already ask for.

Arrow in your chest, and you still have time to be a sex-crazed desperado, V?

I snickered, then suffered for it. Phillip’s expression gave away his overt confusion, and he even stopped a second to stare at me when I snickered.

Yeah, I’ve gone full-blown crazy, Phil.

Still, being impaled by an arrow as thick as my thumb was a brand-new experience, and one I wished never to repeat. I would almost assuredly repeat it, but a girl could dream.

If I live...

I wanted to break the arrow and yank it out, but my arms still wouldn’t move high enough. And now that my body was slowly returning to its lesser Hunter function, I wouldn’t have the strength or regenerate fast enough to save me from it.

Breaking the binding spell would be impossible now, so I had to hope whoever went after me didn’t get Phillip with the same arrow.

Then we’d really be fucked.

The desire to breathe hurried my breaths, but the sensation of drowning indicated that the arrow had very likely caused my lung to collapse.

“Fancy meeting you out here, Phillip,” someone said, coming immediately into view like they’d just outright materialized in front of us. “I itched to go after you one of these days, and would you believe it, here you are.”

Our attacker wore all black that covered everything but his eyes. What I could see, he was terribly large and packed enough weapons to be lethal. Though, that was to be expected of an assassin. Markings swiped lines under his eyes but disappeared under the cover of his face mask.

Assassin’s Creed fanboy much?

But by the looks of it, Phillip knew who he was. Phillip’s eyes widened impossibly, but the emotion swiftly fled a second later. “Eros. I thought you didn’t do kidnapping. I was sure you strictly did assassinations.”

Eros walked over to me, eyes on Phillip the entire time. He took hold of the arrow imbedded in my chest and twisted, and I grunted and clenched my jaw. I didn’t hold out long. I finally gave in and cried out when he yanked it out enough that it was outright torture. Eros kept his gaze directed at my partner as he spun the arrow, bringing my cries to full volume. It made his intentions blatantly obvious. He wanted me to hurt, and in the most excruciating way possible.

Bound inside magic, I was left to the stranger’s whims. Wrath burned the Austrian’s eyes to a luminous white-blue, and his face distorted, totally giving him away.

Eros seemed satisfied and stopped. “That’s interesting. Never seen you make that face, old friend.” His eyes finally found mine. “Torturing you will be fun. I can feel it.”

Dude was a massive sadist.

I collected myself, swallowing sounds. “Happy to help. What sort of ugly are you hiding under that mask?”

Eros’s eyes narrowed, and Phillip smirked despite the intense fear still floundering in his eyes.

I’d call that a win.

“Well, I better get this over with so I can take off with you. I was looking forward to killing you slowly, Phillip, but I don’t have that sort of time.” Eros pivoted, and I slumped as the residual pound of pain echoed inside my chest.

Phillip didn’t seem worried when Eros turned. The fear I saw before was gone. Perplexed, I didn’t know what to make of the other Hunter’s expression as the two glared at each other. But with my heart in my throat and a terrifying pain in my chest from a collapsed lung, I couldn’t breathe.

Eros took out another serum-injected arrow and aimed it directly where Phillip’s heart was, sure to kill him the minute the serum shut down his blood.

Fuck.
