It would be a leap.

But a ridiculous one?

No, I don’t think so.

“Thanks,” I say, my voice almost a whisper. I drop the card from my shaking hand and head in the direction of my room.

Mickey follows behind me, huffing. “Would you slow down, Rex, I swear you’ll –”

“I want to be discharged,” I say.

Mickey furrows his brow. “What?”

“I’m feeling better, I want to be discharged today,” I say. I’m done being cooped up here, done having nurses check up on me every hour. I need to find Isabella and I need to ask her. I need to know.

“I think you’ve gone a little off your rocker with the meds, dude,” Mickey says as we enter my hospital room.

I grit my teeth. “I’m not fucking off my rocker, I need to get out of here!”

“Easy, Rex, take it easy.”

The tension pulls at the wound in my belly, my bruised insides begging me to listen to my manager for once. “Mickey, if you want me on that fucking tour, you’re going to get me discharged today.”

Mickey’s shoulders rise up slightly. He knows I’m not kidding around. “Okay, Rex, okay. Let me… let me see what I can do, alright?”

“Now.”

“Heard.”

Mickey rushes out of the room.

Who said only women were divas? I think I have taken the crown in the music scene ever since we got signed to a major label.

I sit down on the edge of my bed and look out my window which gives me a scenic view of the Ocotillo General Hospital parking lot and the open desert beyond it.

It’s only a picture. It’s all a guess.

But something in my gut is telling me Leo isn’t just Isabella’s little boy.

I think he might be mine too.

Chapter 6

Isabella

“Mrs. Delgado, I just wanted to call about your son’s test results,” a woman’s voice croons through my phone speaker.

I’m too nervous to correct her that it’s not missus Delgado but doctor. “Okay. Excellent,” I say, my heart beating faster.

“Is now a bad time?”

“No, it’s a great time,” I say, shifting my phone to my shoulder and digging through my purse for my car keys. I’ve been waiting on pins and needles for this phone call for days, I’m not about to stop just because I’m walking out of the hospital to my car. “I’m all ears.”

“Well, I’m pleased to inform you –’

Yes.

“Leo’s passed with flying colors. He’s a very bright boy. We think he’d be a great addition to next year’s class.”
