His eyes widen. “That’s not fair.”

“It’s too late,” I say.

“I have a right. Don’t I have a right?” I can practically see the thoughts flicking through his brain, and then out comes, “My lawyer can handle it.”

I can’t get a lawyer involved. I’ll have to diffuse this bomb myself. “It will confuse him.”

“Why? Because you told him his dad was dead? Didn’t want him? What?”

I gape. “No! I –“

“What have you told him about me?”

“Nothing!”

From the way Rex recoils as though he’s taken an arrow to the heart, I realize “nothing” is somehow worse than any of his options. “He doesn’t know anything about me?”

“You don’t know anything about him either. So it’s fair.”

The corner of his mouth ticks up with wry anger. “And whose fault is that?”

I stick my keys in the ignition. “I need to get home.”

“Isabella.”

“So please get out of my car.”

Rex grabs my hand, trying to keep me from turning the car on. “Isabella, let me see him.”

“Get out of my car before I call the cops.”

“You wouldn’t do that.”

“You know I would.”

We struggle over the keys, back and forth, the metal clanking.

“Just let me see him. Just one meeting.”

“No –” My strength strains. For such a skinny nothing of a man, he’s much stronger than he looks. “It’s too – complicated!”

“Isabella, please.” The way he begs, an upglide in my ear. I can feel his breath right on my face. It’s so close to what he sounded like in bed, begging for a release.

It’s that tiny shift that takes me off-guard and lets an idea slip into my head.

What if I let Rex meet Leo?

And what if Rex could do something for me in return?

“Looking forward to speaking further with you and your husband, Mrs. Delgado.”

I release my grip on the keys, letting Rex pull them out of the ignition, effectively winning our tiny scrap.

“Jesus, Isabella, why are you so stubborn?” he asks, dropping my keys into his lap.

My hands are shaking. This might be stupid, but I have to try. “I’ll make you a deal.”

Rex lifts a brow. “I’m listening.”
