“Okay, okay. I’m coming,” he called out. Probably management to tell him his credit card payment didn't go through.

He trudged to the door, head swimming with thoughts. Perhaps it was time to cut bait with Black Flame and move on. They were still waiting on responses from labels after sending out their third EP and if it didn’t take, Rex was almost sure he was getting too old for this shit.

He opened the door with a huff of breath. “Can I help y—"

The last person he expected to see was Isabella. Breathless Isabella, hair slung back in a ponytail, her face bare and free from makeup.

Somehow even more beautiful than the night before. If it were possible for the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen to be more beautiful.

“Hey,” he said, unsure what to say. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, I just –“ She sealed her full lips together. “I was thinking –” she tried again to no avail.

A smile cracked onto Rex’s face.

“I just needed to see you again,” she groaned, running her hands over her eyes. “During my shift today I couldn’t stop thinking about last night.”

Butterflies erupted from their cocoons in his stomach. “Me either.”

Isabella peeked through her fingers at him. And then, without another word, flung her arms around his neck and kissed him all the way back to the bed.

Yes, Isabella’s memory had played tricks on her. Because fucking Rex was even better during the day when neither of them were inhibited by the effects of alcohol. She was even more sensitive to his touch, to the way his tongue swirled around her dark nipples and the dance of his fingers between her thighs. And when he entered her, bare and erect beyond belief, she couldn’t help but allow every pent-up moan to slide out from between her lips.

Two years without sex had added up. And it wasn’t fair that she was breaking her celibacy with someone so good at it. He was going to ruin her for anyone else more suitable.

When all was said and done, Isabella snuggled into the hollow of Rex’s body, her face pressed into his shoulder. She could feel his warmth still inside her, the remnants of his pleasure. But she didn’t want to get up and ruin this moment. Not when she’d come all the way across town from a long shift at the hospital just for this release.

“I thought I wasn’t going to see you again,” Rex murmured, planting a kiss to her forehead.

“If I’m honest, me either,” Isabella said. She ran a hand down his ribs. “I just…”

Isabella’s mind had always been a logical series of events. Graduate high school, go to college, med school, residency, work up to doctor. Then she could consider the next logical set of events. Meet a man, date for at least a year and a half, get engaged and married, and get pregnant immediately. The second plan of course hinged on another person.

But if anyone could make love happen on schedule, it was Isabella.

However, she didn’t plan on meeting Rex Redford. A man who made no sense with her plan.

Isabella didn’t finish her sentence. She didn’t need to.

Rex pulled her closer as if reading her mind, tucked her dark hair behind her hair, and whispered, “Yeah. Same.”

She giggled, tracing a line up his neck with her nose. She’d forgotten how good it felt to be close to someone. “When do you leave?” she finally asked, knowing the answer would disappoint her.

Rex captured her chin in his hand and adjusted her face so she could see his eyes. “Is it crazy if I say I don’t want to?”

Isabella grinned. “Yes.”

However, for once, crazy wasn’t a bad thing.

Chapter 8

Isabella

I never imagined Leo and Rex together. To protect myself.

Okay, that’s not true.

I’ve blocked the imaginings out. They happened constantly while I was pregnant and even more often than that when Leo was a newborn. Seeing anyone hold Leo, I’d get a flash of what it might be like to see Rex hold Leo.
