I head inside from the balcony and look at the thin edge of light spilling across the carpet from the bedroom. With a smile, I walk closer to the bedroom door and rest my head against the doorframe.

“You’ll be here when I wake up?” Leo’s small voice pipes up from inside.

“Of course,” I hear Rex reply, his voice warm like honey, dripping with exhaustion.

“And what about the next day?”

“If I’m not there, you can call me right away.”

There is a pause. “I want you to be there,” Leo says.

Another pause. “I want to be there, too, buddy.”

“Tell Mama.”

Rex chuckles. “You know what, I will.”

“Because Mama will want you there too.”

“You think so?” Rex asks.

I smile to myself. It’s not as simple as all of that. But I’m learning to be okay with that. Laying eyes on Rex again, in the flesh, not only ignited every part of me again, but also filled the emptiness of his absence. His declaration of love sealed the deal for me.

I love him. So much.

It might not be conventional. It might be more complicated than I’d like. However, complicated doesn’t mean something isn’t good.

“You should go to sleep so I can go talk to Mama, alright?” Rex says.

I hold back a giggle. Smooth. He’s already catching onto the trickery of parenting.

“Okay!” Leo eagerly says. “Tuck me in.”

I retreat from the door, back to the suite’s kitchen. I’ve never been in a hotel room so nice. Bedroom, living room, kitchen, spa level bathroom. Rex must be used to a life like this.

There’s a bottle of champagne sitting out, the cork off, in need of drinking. Beside it is a bottle of sparkling apple juice. The three of us all celebrated together when we got to the hotel from the concert. Though Leo wanted to stay up and talk for hours, it’s way past bedtime and I insisted he go to bed. The condition was Rex had to be the one to tuck him in and Rex was more than amenable.

I start to refill both our glasses, pretending I don’t hear Rex creep out of the bedroom and the click of the door shutting.

His footsteps grow closer and closer until his arms wrap across my chest and his body presses up against my back. “Hi,” he whispers in my ear.

“Hi,” I reply, then turn my head over my shoulder to look at him.

Our lips meet in a soft kiss. Long and unhurried. Rex’s hips idle against my backside, back and forth like a pendulum. I feel him growing there. And while I want him, desperately want to be filled by him over and over, I’m in no hurry.

“Mm,” he grunts, moving his hands down to my waist and dropping his mouth to my neck. “This dress is insane, Isabella.”

I laugh. “Insane?”

“I mean, you’ve probably seen how fantastic you look from the front, but from the back? Yeesh… God almighty.” His hands cup my backside and squeeze.

More laughter that I have to keep quiet. “He’s asleep?”

“Getting there. I promised him I’d have a talk with his mother.”

“About?” I ask innocently and spin out of his clutches.

Rex lifts his head and accepts the glass of champagne as I hand it to him. “About what’s…” He lifts his free hand. “What’s going to happen, I guess.”
