Rex knocks back the rest of the champagne and then closes the space between us, pressing his hands to the counter on either side of me. Except it’s not a motion of want. At least not yet. Whatever he wants to say is so urgent and so heavy he needs me. Right here. “I want you on tour with me.”

My eyebrows jump. “What?!”

“You. Leo. Your mom. I heard she and Mickey hit it off actually,” Rex says.

I slap him on the arm. “Don’t talk about my mother like that!”

“It was a joke!” he hisses, rubbing the spot my hand thwacked.

“I can’t go on tour with you, Rex. I work.”

Rex shakes his head. “You don’t have to work anymore.”

“Um, yeah I do.”

Rex narrows his eyes. “You know who you’re talking to, right?”

“It’s not about – I can’t be beholden to you for money, Rex, that’s just –“

He places two fingers to my jaw and I stop talking. “I’d be taking care of you.” This thumb settles against my chin. “Because that’s what I want to do.”

My mind races. I don’t want to give up my job. At the same time, I want this to work. More than anything.

“We could travel the world together,” Rex whispers. “I’ll take care of you. And our baby.”

There’s a hiccup in my chest. Aurelio. Our baby.

“I would never get in the way of your life and what you want. But we have so many years to make up for, Isabella. I don’t want to wait.”

I won’t lie, I could use a break. A long one. “Maybe I could figure out how to take a sabbatical or something.”

Rex gives me the warmest, eye-crinkling smile ever.

I tilt my head back, rise on my tiptoes, and slide my hands through his damp hair. “I give you permission right now that if I ever get too serious or stubborn and start to pull away –”

“I’ll drag you to the courthouse and marry you,” he says, then forces his lips on mine.

I gasp under his mouth and try to reply in the spaces between our kisses. “That’s not what I was going to –“

But then he kisses me so hard I forget where I am in thought. I just know I’m here in his arms and there is no place I’d rather be.

“Let me have you,” he rasps. He tucks his hands against my thighs. “Please.”

I let him lift me up onto the counter, my ass perched right at the edge. “You have to be quiet. I don’t want to wake him.”

“I can see the door. Don’t worry, mami.”

I hold in a loud giggle. “That was kinda hot.”

Rex kisses my neck, pulling at it with his teeth.

“And… fuck, so is that.” I drop my head back against the cabinets and stifle a moan.

His mouth works in concert with his hands. They slide up my legs, lifting the orange dress until it’s bunched up against my waist. I press my hands into his back, trying to tattoo the feeling of him on my fingers. With my legs wrapped around him, I use my toes to pull on the band of his sweatpants. Closer and closer to feeling him.

“I want to take my time, but –”

I lock my elbow around his neck and give him a kiss. “You’re going to learn quickly that time is a luxury when you’ve got a kid running around.”
