Hands linked, we sat down on the sofa. It was the same sofa I’d been lying on when Nyx had stepped into Calli’s living room, just after Nero and I had returned from the Lost City, where I’d been shot with an immortal weapon. This sofa was packed full of memories.

“We have a lot to discuss,” I said, setting the lid on the empty box of cookies. I’d processed what had happened, and now I was finally ready to talk.

I told them how I’d tried to go to Khalon’s castle after talking to Coralia, but Ava had hijacked my trip and sent me to some dark and sandy world to deliver her ultimatum before stranding me there.

“How did you escape?” Gin asked.

“I teleported.”

Tessa grinned at me. “Welcome to the club, sis.”

“You can teleport?” Zane rubbed his chin.

“Kind of,” I said, which was the honest truth. “It’s a lot harder than it looks. Before I teleported off that world, I first teleported into a bunch of sand dunes.”

Nero snorted. And I really couldn’t blame him. I’d teased him a lot about his teleportation mishaps before he’d gotten the hang of the ability.

“What else can you do now?” Zane asked me.

“No idea. But when everything settles down, I’ll try to figure it out.”

I probably should have knocked on wood after saying that.

“Did Ava have a djinn with her? An ally working with her as we speculated?” Nero asked.

That’s one of the things I loved about him. He always stayed on mission.

“No, there was no djinn,” I replied. “Ava isn’t working with a djinn. She’s teleporting using immortal artifacts.”

“Ava has immortal artifacts? How many?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I only saw her teleporting bracelets.”

“How did you know Ava’s bracelets were for teleporting?”

“I’m not sure. I just did.” I shrugged. “Maybe it’s my new magic. I really hope I have a bunch of other abilities. It would be cool to have the powers of a changeling or a phoenix.”

“Not that cool,” said my phoenix sister Gin. “Rebirth sucks.”

“Even so, I wouldn’t mind if you were un-killable,” Nero told me.

“Need someone to test that out for you?” Damiel asked.

He and Cadence had teleported themselves into the middle of our conversation. I’d always found it annoying how teleporters regularly popped up out of nowhere, but now that I could teleport…well, I was imagining the possibilities. Teleporting could be pretty convenient—even lifesaving.

“No,” Nero told his father sharply. “I do not want you to try to kill my wife.”

“So,” Cadence said, before Damiel could get himself into even more trouble with Nero. “You know who else had a lot of immortal artifacts? Zarion.”

“The gods and the demons have been collecting them for some time,” Zane said.

“Yes, they stole immortal artifacts from the hunters they killed,” said Cadence.

“They were also searching for Sunfire’s Lost Workshop, a treasure trove of immortal artifacts,” Zane told her.

Cadence frowned. “And did they find the workshop?”

“Sonja found where it was, but her soldiers couldn’t figure out a way inside,” replied Zane. “Unless that’s changed.”
