ChapterThirty-Six

Dominik

“Son of a fucking bitch!” Jackson bellowed.

I knew my best friend well. It was one of the reasons why I brought him on to help me with the company. I knew what he was capable of, I knew his tolerance for bullshit was high, and I knew what he could accomplish once that bullshit had become too much.

And as his voice bellowed across the room, I watched Eden sink to her knees.

“There is no fucking way in God damn hell that we are going to sit back and let that fucker control our lives. Never!” Jackson roared. “We’re combing through every rule and every precedence we ever fucking set in this company, and we are tossing that motherfucker’s ass off our board of investors. That’s the first thing we’re doing. And the second thing!? The thing that we should’ve done a hell of a long time ago? We’re fucking talking to the police, you hear me!? We’re talking to people who can help us. Hell, I’ll hire out a God damn NAVY Seal team if that’s what it takes to keep us safe! That man will be DEAD before he ever steps foot in this fucking company again. That stupid fucking piece of garbage!”

I moved away from my desk as Jackson lit up the room with his words. The match had been struck, and the only thing we could do was let him get it out of his system. I had more important things to deal with anyway. I had a company to save. I had a reputation to keep.

I had a woman whose family was crumbling around her, and she needed help.

“Eden?” I asked as I dipped down.

She planted her hands into the floor and started breathing deeply. “Leave me alone.”

I cupped the back of her head. “Look at me.”

“Leave me alone, Dominik.”

“After you look at me.”

She slowly raised her gaze to my stare. “What?”

I slid my thumb down her face and along her cheek. “Take a moment, and then let’s go through what we know.”

Her eyes widened. “Didn’t you hear that man on the line? We have to stop. We’re going to die if we don’t stop.”

“My company is involved in this somehow. At least, that’s what my gut is telling me. This man sits on my board, Eden. He has access to very sensitive information quarterly. We’ve got to figure out what’s going on.”

She shook her head. “It’s always about you, isn’t it?”

I gripped her chin. “Not this time, beautiful.”

Her gaze softened a bit. “What did you just call me?”

Instead of repeating myself, I simply offered her my hand. Yes, this was about me and my company. But it wasn’t just about me and my company. Eden owed it to her family to figure out what the hell was going on just like I owed it to my employees to keep them safe. And if the mafia had sunken their talons into my company, I needed to figure out why.

After all, it wouldn’t have been the first time a shady-as-fuck organization attempted to claw their way to the top of a business.

Eden took a moment to breathe. Her back arched and caved with her breaths, and for the smallest of seconds I wanted to get down onto the floor with her. I wanted to pull her on top of me, hold her close, then roll her over and fuck the living daylights out of her. I knew it would pull both of us out of the recesses of our mind. I knew that if the two of us could simply get some sort of relief from the chaos of the evening, even if only for a few minutes, we’d be able to think much clearer.

“Okay,” she whispered as she slid her hand into my own, “help me up.”

I did as she asked, pulling her to her feet. “Now, let’s talk about what we’ve--”

She placed her finger against my lips before shaking her head. Then, she pulled out her cell phone and turned it off. She started snapping her fingers while holding up her phone, then walked around the room as if she were demanding everyone’s electronics.

“What are you doing?” Em asked.

Eden shook her head before she pointed to her phone. Then, she pointed at Em’s back pocket. Her sister slid her phone out and I watched as Eden turned it off, and it finally clicked what she was doing.

So, I walked over to my desk and scribbled a note on some paper for everyone to read.

Turn off your phones and help me unplug the electronics in the room. They’re listening to us.
