“The man sits on our board, Jackson. He regularly funnels millions of dollars into our long-term investments. We deserve to know what the hell is going on. We deserve to know whether our company is of use to him, or a front for the public to keep him in their good graces.”

He groaned as he rubbed Em’s back. “Fine, fine. I’ll make the call. But I won’t be responsible for what happens afterward because I certainly don’t agree with this. You and I know as well as anyone in this company that we don’t need a hard and fast reason to unseat anyone from our board. We worked that into their contracts for a reason.”

I tilted my head. “But if we unseat him now, in the midst of all of this, it makes us look guilty as hell and it could make us targets. We might not need a reason contractually, but we need a reason if we’re going to keep putting on faces. So, we do what we’re good at. We get the facts, we do the research, and we twist the truth.”

“What, then?” Eden asked.

Em shrugged. “It’s a good question.”

Eden sighed as she gazed up into my face. “What happens after you find a reason and unseat the man? What’s your next move?”

My eyes danced between hers. “I’ll figure it out when we get there, but we can’t drop this. We can’t drop it until we know what’s going on. Until we know what kind of danger we’re in. I’m not going to spend the rest of my days looking over my shoulder because of some bully. And if you don’t want to be involved, that’s totally--”

A smirk crawled across her face. “Now, I never said that.”

“You’re really considering this?” Em asked.

And when Eden turned to face her sister, I heard a spark in Eden’s voice that sent my heart fluttering in my chest.

“I’m not only considering it,” Eden said with confidence, “I’m ready to see this through to the end. Until we’ve slapped that man in handcuffs and dragged him off for good.”

I couldn’t help the smile that crossed my face. “Then, let’s get to work.”
