I shrugged. “Sounds like you’re shit out of luck, then. Because if you can’t prove it, and I can’t fight it, then a judge can’t rule on it.”

His shadow cloaked me as his voice lowered into an octave that rattled every bone in my body. “That’s what you think.”

“That’s what I know, Mr. Drake.”

I wasn’t sure how long we stared each other down, but when he took a step back toward the kitchen door, I considered it a win for the moment. I watched as the door swung effortlessly on its hinges, covering up the heavy footfalls of the man soaring away from us. I drew in a deep breath as my body relaxed. I turned toward the scared little boy that had pressed himself into my sister’s arms.

And as she tried soothing him by rubbing his back, he murmured a set of words that forced my vision to drip with red.

“I could always go back and help Dad in his mechanic shop. That was good money as well.”

I pointed at him. “You will do no such thing. Since when did we allow assholes to run us over like this?”

Emily shook her head. “Do you really think it’s gonna be worth the fight, though? I mean, he could bleed us dry simply in court costs. Then, what?”

I shook my head. “I won’t allow some entitled, self-centered asshole to ruin everything you’ve worked so hard for. So, you leave the defense and the money to me. I’ll make sure we all get out of this with our dignity and our lives intact.”

Then, I pulled my cell phone out from the tight bra built into my dress and shot my secretary a text message. I needed her to clear my schedule for the next day.

Because I had a bully to visit.
