“Mr. Drake?”

My secretary’s voice filled my office from the intercom situated on my desk. I placed my to-go bag in my chair and pressed the red button, readying myself for whatever hiccup was about to destroy my weekend plans.

“Yes, Shonda?”

“Jackson’s here to see you. He says it’s important.”

“Send him in.”

I didn’t even get the button depressed before my office door swung open. “We need to talk.”

I picked my bag up from my chair. “I have to be at the tarmac in forty-five minutes. What is it?”

He stormed toward me. “You seriously want me to keep digging into the Rochere family? I thought you told me you had that settled after you talked with Emily’s older sister?”

“Concerned that her sister isn’t going to continue fucking around with you?”

“Among other things. Why am I still doing research on them?”

I came out from around my desk. “Because I want everything on the family just in case this blows up in our faces. The NDA goes both ways, and I don’t see Miss Rochere cooperating for long.”

Jackson turned and walked with me. “But it makes us look guilty if we do that research beforehand.”

I turned to face him as we stood in the doorway of my office. “You’d never be this concerned if your sex life wasn’t being threatened, so I’ll only say this once because you’re a dear friend of mine and I figure I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt: do as I say, or you’re out of a job.”

“This is going to blow up in our faces, you know,” he called out as I soared down the hallway.

“Just do your damn job, Jackson,” I barked back as I jammed my hand into the elevator button.

I had a private elevator that came all the way up to the top floor of the building that only I could access. And the second the golden doors opened for me, I slid inside. Jackson glared at me from down the hallway, his hands on his hips like some irritated little housewife.

I wiggled my fingers at him with a grin on my face before the doors closed in front of me.

Then, I swiped my smart watch against the keypad in the elevator.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Drake,” the female A.I. voice said.

“To the main floor, Miss Kingsley. I have a jet to catch.”

“Of course,” she said as the elevator jarred to life.

The journey to the tarmac was one of reflected silence. I took these trips for myself to get away and clear my head, which was something I required many to do that were under my employ. Working at the mercy of the media was like battling a warhorse daily. There were never any winners. Or losers. There was only the truth and how it could be twisted to manipulate the masses out of more money.

And while I loved money, I loved peace of mind even more.

“What time is it?” I asked my driver as we pulled onto the private tarmac.

“5:42, sir.”

My eyes searched the world around me through the tinted windows. Eden was nowhere to be found, so the countdown started. If she didn’t show up exactly at six like the itinerary had specified, then I knew exactly where I was going.

“Do you need help with your things, sir?” my driver asked.

I shook my head. “No. Just sit here until six. We may need to go somewhere if my other party doesn’t show up.”
