BLADE

One Month Later

The last monthof the semester was insane.

Isabella had somehow fit tutoring sessions into her demanding schedule, which included waitressing and studying for her own classes. In between study sessions, we spent every second together, whether in bed or going on dates. It was the happiest that I’d ever been.

Never before did I think I’d be content spending time with a girl without the promise of hot sex in return. The old me would have viewed that as a waste of time, but now I looked forward to actual dates. Going to the movies and dinner together, followed by the bedroom stuff if we weren’t too tired afterwards.

The last week on campus was spent packing things up for the semester. Isabella would be coming back home with me, where I’d introduce her to my parents over the holidays.

That Friday afternoon, I found myself constantly refreshing my email, hoping to get the results for my finals. Even though Isabella was confident I’d passed, the fact that I whizzed through each final exam actually concerned me. I let out a sigh of relief, however, when the email came through, confirming that I’d aced every single class.

As I was packing the rest of my belongings for our trip back home that Sunday, the football coach called me out of the blue.

“Hey, coach. What’s up?”

“You’re probably wondering what the Lions thought about you.”

Of course, I’d been wondering. I hadn’t heard anything since meeting with the recruiter, but I’d been too damn happy with Isabella to give it too much thought. That was one of the things that drew me to her so much. It’s like the rest of the world didn’t seem to matter as much when she was around. “I’d be lying if I said no.”

“Are you sitting down?”

My stomach dropped as I lowered myself onto the bed, preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. “I am now, coach.”

“They want to sign you.”

I dropped to my knees and, in the process, consequently dropped my cell phone. I’d officially made it. The California Lions wanted to sign me on as an official member. My entire life had been building to the day when all my hard work would pay off.

“Thank you, coach! This is the best news I’ve ever heard. I don’t even know what to say.”

“Of course, there are a few things that are contingent. You have to keep your grades up, graduate on time next May, and move to Los Angeles immediately after graduation. Is any of that going to be a problem?”

I wanted to say absolutely not, but I did have to think for a moment.

Isabella and I would be leaving Exley at the same time, and both of us were relatively certain that we’d end up together. She often talked about moving someplace warm and sunny, but we never actually agreed that she’d followed me out to California if I ended up getting signed. It was just assumed.

Even if she couldn’t join me, though, we’d somehow make it work.

“No,” I said. “None of that is a problem.”

“Perfect. Enjoy winter break, and I’ll see you when you get back in a few weeks.”

After Coach hung up, I threw my phone onto the bed and screamed so loud that Aiden came rushing into the room from the shower, shampoo suds cascading off his head and onto the floor.

“Bro, what the fuck is going on? Are you okay?”

The only thing that stopped me from picking him up and hugging him was the soap running down his body.

“I made the team, man.” I punched a hand into my fist. “I’ll be playing for the California Lions next year!”

“Dude!” He slapped his hand against mine, high-fiving me. “We have to celebrate but I need to finish this shower first.”

He hurried into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.

Isabella worked all day at the diner, but she was the first person I thought of to give the good news to. I fired off a text message to her.

Me:I made the team, babe!
