“What’s it to you, anyway?” I ask with a humph.

“Nothing, really. It’s easy enough for me to go back to Mister Romani and pretend I never saw you. But I’d probably tell him I did, considering he’d find you by the time he finishes his morning coffee,” Maddox says. “Wouldn’t want it to spill out later and cause problems for me.”

He’s so confident and collected, as if this is some rehearsed speech.

“How can you be so sure?”

“Credit cards, cell phone…”

“Already took care of that. Don’t have either of those on me,” I feel pretty smug. Beat them at their own game.

“You don’t think there’s a tracker in that car somewhere? I wouldn’t be surprised if your father has one on everyone’s car, just to keep tabs on us.”

Shit, he’s right. A tracker on the car, I didn’t even think about that.

“Well, let me not keep you. If you want to go then do so freely,” Maddox opens his door again and gets half in. “But just think about it before you do. If you’re kept under lock and key now, how do you think it’ll be if they drag you back here?”

Maddox slams his door, and starts the engine. He doesn’t drive away though. He’s waiting for me to make a decision, and ultimately, I know he’s right. I haven’t thought everything through. The plan doesn’t change, it’s only delayed.

I gesture for Maddox to roll down his window, and he does.

“You’re right,” it pains me to say it out loud. “I’ll go back home.”

“Good. I’ll follow you and make sure nothing happens.”

Then we’re back on the road, heading to the palace. So close to tasting freedom and I’ve never felt further.
