No. Of course not. Point me in a direction and tell me what to do, that’s what I’m good at. Expecting anything more is too much.

“If that day comes, I’ll do whatever it takes,” I say, instead. There’s no point in fearing the future. I don’t see much point in worrying about it anyway. The chances of anything happening to Bruno are slim.

“I knew I could count on you.” Bruno nods.

Then, before we can carry on, Isabella steps through the door through which Bruno and I entered earlier. My jaw practically hits the table at the sight of her.

She’s dressed in a tight, red dress; short enough that it only barely covers her thighs. A light coat of makeup accentuates her features, with a bright layer of lipstick matching her dress. Her eyes are smoky, enticing, and enhance those golden brown orbs.

Christ. If I’m not careful, I might just fall in love.

“Hi, Maddox,” she says. Her voice is soft, humble. She walks towards us with a sultry saunter.

“Miss Romani.” I stay respectfully.

“Isabella, so nice of you to join us. I was just telling Maddox here about how well the wedding preparations are going.” Bruno’s eyes tell me to go along with the lie.

I say nothing; too awe-struck by how amazing Isabella looks.

“Right, tomorrow’s the big day,” she says.

“I do apologize for my father’s desperate need to impose,” I say.

“Nonsense.” Bruno taps my shoulder. “He’s got every right to meet with us. We’re going to be family soon, right?”

“Of course.” I clear my throat.

I’m finding it difficult to break my gaze on Isabella. What’s worse, I can’t bring myself to look into her eyes. Shame fills me to the core for all that’s going on. If I want to turn tail and run, how must Isabella be feeling about it all? If she’s turning on to the idea, I can’t believe it’s because she actually wants this. Her attempt at running away is enough for me to know that much.

We don’t get to chat for long, before an older gentleman, dressed in an all-black suit steps through the door. He keeps his hands behind his back, his eyes pinned ahead of him. Dapper is an understatement for him. The butler, I’m guessing.

“Master Romani, Oswald Braddock, and his children have arrived. Shall I bring them through?”

“Yes, let them in,” Bruno replies. “Let’s get this over with then.”

“Let’s get it over with,” I parrot Bruno’s words, finishing my last swallow and pouring another drink.
