Daisy

I’d love to try it out for a night in the cabin, if you don’t mind.

I grinned at my phone and tapped out a response.

Forrest

Pack a bag, sunshine. I’ll be over shortly to pick you up.

Before I spent my entire morning in bed texting Daisy instead of actually visiting with her, I set the phone down on the nightstand and rolled out of bed. Then I got myself ready for a day of fun with her, doing it with a smile on my face.

“It’s such a tough decision.”

I hadn’t realized there was anything for Daisy to debate, but I was certainly intrigued. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m not sure what’s better,” she returned. “After our day out together today, I’m torn between which I like best—Landing or Scarlet Valley.”

Suddenly, it all made sense.

Daisy and I had just gotten back to the cabin a little while ago, and we were settling in for the night now that we’d both had dinner and taken showers.

To say I was eager for this part of our day together would have been an understatement. Even if things didn’t go where I would ultimately want them to go—how could I not want us to have more than just the kissing between us—I liked knowing Daisy would be spending the night here with me.

“You liked both locations?” I asked.

She shook her head. “I’ve loved both places. But what I like about each town is vastly different. What makes one special is something unique to that location. It’s hard to choose.”

“Well, you know I’m partial to Scarlet Valley, but I can’t say I don’t understand your dilemma. Landing is pretty spectacular, too.”

“How will I ever decide?” she questioned me.

I shrugged and suggested, “Why don’t you tell me what it is you like about each location? Maybe if you lay it out like that, you might be able to draw a final conclusion.”

“That’s a good idea,” she declared as she sat up on the couch a little straighter.

As she moved, I had to admit I struggled to keep my eyes focused solely on her face. Since we were winding down for the evening, Daisy was wearing a pair of joggers and a T-shirt, and it was clear she had nothing on underneath the shirt. Seeing her relaxed like this after days of being bundled up in the cold or with her simply wearing a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt was a nice surprise, even if I had to find a way to hide how much seeing her like that affected me. God, I felt like a teenage boy who couldn’t control himself.

“Alright, so lay it on me,” I urged. “Let’s talk about Landing.”

Her eyes fluttered like she had just fallen in love. “It’s Landing, Forrest. It’s home to Westwood’s—the best place in the world to get chocolate. That’s tough to beat. But it’s more than just that. I might have only been there once, but it was the best day of my life. I had so much fun there with you, so it’s hard not to love it there.”

She’d made a reasonable assessment and had a valid argument for ranking the town so high. What I loved most about it was that her reasoning wasn’t simply related to what the town of Landing had to offer, but it was about the memories she’d made there. I couldn’t say I disagreed with any of what she’d said.

“What about Scarlet Valley?” I pressed.

“Well, I loved the quaint little town and all the shops it has. And the ski resort offers a lot, even for those of us who aren’t necessarily skilled with skiing or snowboarding. But I think the thing that I love most about it here is that I met you. We might have had all that fun in Landing, and it’s a day I know I’ll never forget, but if I hadn’t come here to Scarlet Valley, I never would have met you.” Her voice had started to crack, forcing her to pause for just a moment. And when she finally managed to speak again, she obliterated me. “I think that’s the thing that sets this place just one notch higher. My life has left a lot to be desired, but if everything I’d been through has led me to this place, I’d do it a hundred times over just to be able to have these two weeks with you.”

Something squeezed in the center of my chest, and the feeling moved out through my body. I needed a minute to come to grips with Daisy’s unexpected words. All I could seem to do was reach my arm out in her direction. “Come here.”

Daisy didn’t hesitate to crawl over toward me. I wrapped my arm around her back, brought my other hand up to the skin along the front of her throat, and allowed my eyes to roam over her face.

Whether she recognized I was struggling to speak, or she just had more she wanted to say, I didn’t know for sure, but Daisy shared, “This trip has been the best time of my whole life.”

“And meeting you has been the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” I whispered.

Daisy licked her lips before I felt her throat move beneath my hand as she swallowed. Unable to stop myself, I closed the remaining distance between our mouths and kissed her.

And just when I thought she was pulling back, so we could stop and settle in for a movie, she begged, “Please take me to your bed, Forrest.”
