“I’m a bit of an idiot,” I confessed.

“Well, that’s not true. Why would you say that?”

Vivian was going to change her mind as soon as I told her the truth. “I met someone.”

Her eyes widened in surprise as she gasped. “What? When? Who is she?”

“Her name is Daisy Clark, and I met her right at the beginning of my trip,” I revealed.

“Am I to assume you spent your entire trip with her?” Vivian questioned me.

“You can, and you’d be right.”

Slowly, my sister nodded her head with understanding. Her eyes roamed over my face for several moments before she asked, “Where does she live?”

I looked away from sister and returned my eyes to the vast landscape in front of me. “In Birch Creek, hours away from here.”

The silence stretched between us for several moments. Knowing what I knew about Vivian, she had about a million questions and was currently trying to sort through them, so she’d be certain to ask the most pertinent ones.

“How serious did it get?”

“We crossed all the lines, if that’s what you’re asking,” I answered honestly.

“And is that why you think you’re an idiot?”

I shook my head. There wasn’t a chance I’d ever regret having what I did with Daisy. Even if, for some reason, I never saw her again, I’d still be glad I had the time with her that I did. “I never told her the truth.”

“The truth? You aren’t one for lying, Forrest.”

“I didn’t lie to her about anything, but I didn’t tell her the truth about how I felt for her,” I clarified.

There was another lengthy bout of silence. “You were gone for two weeks.”

That was the moment I returned my attention to my sister. “Yeah. And in that time, I fell in love with her.”

Vivian looked like if she could have grown three heads at that point, she would have. “So, you fell in love, didn’t tell her, and now you’re feeling nothing but regret. Am I right?”

“That about sums it up.”

“What’s stopping you from telling her now?” she pressed. “I mean, you’re only an idiot if you feel the way you do and don’t do anything about it.”

I didn’t know what was stopping me.

Fear, maybe?

What if I told her how I felt, and she thought I was crazy? Who even falls in love with someone after only two weeks? Maybe I was just worried it was lust and that once I got back home, I’d feel differently.

I guess I did feel differently now. It was just that instead of the feelings I had for Daisy subsiding, they were only growing stronger.

“I don’t want to tell her over the phone,” I reasoned. “Her birthday is coming up in May. I was going to visit her then and tell her the truth when I saw her.”

“Well, that’s not so bad. You don’t have to wait too long. In the meantime, just try to keep yourself busy and continue to talk to her over the phone,” Vivian reasoned.

I smiled at her. She made it seem so simple, and perhaps it should have been. “I don’t think it’s that easy.”

A crease formed between her brows. “Why would you say that?”

“I reached out to her when I got back a week ago, and while she responded that night, she hasn’t said anything since.”
