If these lights were connected to the fuckers who abused my mate, I would end them once and for all.

Chapter Nine

Blaze

“You can’t go out there,” Karelis said, gripping my hoodie, her shallow breaths heavy and the worry pouring out of her voice.

“I have to, Karelis. There could be someone hurting. Someone being attacked. There’s a chance we could save them from murder. I can’t not go out there.”

Cas and Adan started getting ready as well, pulling on shoes while I waited, anxious to get going. Karelis’ gaze danced between me and the window, and clearly there was some kind of internal argument going on in her head.

“Well, then I’m going with you,” she said, fists propped up on her pajama-clad hips again. What I wouldn’t do to get my hands on those hips.

“Oh hell no.” Cas eyed her while he grabbed his phone.

“Excuse me?” Karelis snapped and all of us froze. Looked like we might be about to have our first argument.

Adan walked over to her and smoothed his hands down her arms. “Karelis, mate, we haven’t known you for very long, and we’ve waited for our mate for a very long time. We don’t want to take any chances of you getting hurt or something worse.”

“Night will—”

Adan hushed her up with a kiss. Huh. Didn’t think that would work, but she lost her words once he kissed her. He said, “I know that badass female wolf inside you would kill anything in her way, but my wolf is going to have you as my first priority because you always will be. I won’t be able to focus on two things at once. Please, this once. Stay inside and give your three mates some peace of mind while we check this out.”

Interesting.

“Fine. But if I see something or hear something that means you three might be in trouble, I’m coming down and saving all three of your asses.”

That made us all laugh. “Please do,” I answered. “My ass is worth saving. Let’s go.”

We all kissed our mate and listened for the door lock after going out into the hallway.

“How are we doing this?” I asked once we were closer to the stairwell. “We’re going out there gung-ho, or should we shift first?”

Casimir, our in-house warrior expert, darted his gaze around while coming up with a plan. “I think we sneak down there and see if we can find out what’s going on. If we race in and interrupt immediately, the person or thing or whatever in the hell is down there, will run away or attack, leaving us hurt or with more questions than answers. We need to find out who in the hell is behind all of this and if it has any connection to our mate.”

That stopped the rest of us in our tracks. “Wait, you think this has some connection to Karelis?” Adan gripped Cas’s hoodie, stopping his forward motion.

“Well, I’ve been thinking about it, and it’s only a guess, but our girl came from a place called the Light Kingdom. And there’s been a whole hell of a lot of weird lights since she arrived here. You two ever hear of any purple lights being associated with shifter murders before Karelis came around?”

I bowed up, puffing out my chest. “You’re not saying she’s connected, as in she has something to do with all of this, are you?”

“Blaze, come on. I love her just as much as you do. She’s mine, too. I would never think that. More like…maybe whoever was after her, wanting to take her wolf, has found her and is playing a fucking game with us—with all of us, trying to get to her.”

Adan cursed more than I’d ever heard since I’d known him. “We really need to get our mate out of here. We all know that Valentina and Onyx would smoke anyone who tried to get to Blaze’s mate. She doesn’t know us but they all know Asher and Blaze.”

“She deserves better than this place, even if there was no one after her or us,” I said, clearing my throat.

Adan and Cas nodded. “You’re absolutely right,” Cas said. “Let’s put out this fire and get back to her. Come on. Eyes and ears open. I’m taking point.”

I snorted. Cas would always be a warrior at heart.

Chapter Ten

Karelis

I decided to give them an hour to get back, and I considered that generous. I tried to watch from the window and only a few minutes after they left, the lights had died down. No noises. No screaming.

Night paced inside me, ready and willing to tear everyone in her way down if they got to my mates.
