I mentally rehearsed all the things I wanted to say to her, but when I opened my mouth, they didn’t come. I didn’t think she was ready to hear how amazing she was and how full of absolute bullshit the people were who had convinced her that she didn’t or couldn’t have a mate.

Seriously, what kind of deranged, twisted crap was that?

Raise a woman to believe she wasn’t worthy of a mate and somehow blame that fact on her being blessed with two wolves inside her?

Whoever did that to her, I’d like to meet them in a dark alley—in my wolf form.

“I think I need to get back to my room,” she said, but the way she clung to me told a different story. I certainly didn’t want to let her go.

Not to another room—not even the one across from our suite or out of this bed.

“We don’t even know if it’s safe out there, Karelis. We have to make sure. I won’t have you in danger,” Cas implored, sitting up to make sure he held her gaze.

“I have to check that June is safe. She doesn’t have…anyone to protect her. It’s just across the hall anyway. You would know if something was wrong, and I could always come and get you if I suspect there’s danger.”

What could I say to convince her to stay? She might be in danger, and she was our mate, and we never wanted to let her go. Seemed like solid reasons to me.

“She can pop in here or come get us if there’s something wrong.”

She huffed out a laugh. “And if I’m there, nothing is going to have the chance to get her before she can come for help.”

Blaze scrubbed his hand over his head. “I know you’re strong, Karelis, but…”

“But nothing,” she snapped back. “I understand that you want to keep me safe, but Night won’t let anything happen to me.”

Night? Who the fuck was that? All three of us moved, positioning ourselves in front of her. “Who is Night?” Blaze asked, his wolf coming through. Didn’t blame him. Our mate was talking about another person defending her.

“Night is my second wolf. I named them mentally so I could speak to them. She’s the fiercest one. She saved me the night of my parents’ death, and I called her Night because of that. She saved me in the darkness. She’s not like other wolves.” Karelis wrung her hands and blew out a long breath. “Murder wouldn’t be out of her range if I was in danger or to protect anyone I care about.”

My entire body relaxed. For a split second, I’d thought she was talking about another male. Damn my shifter jealousy. “Is there anything we can say to stop you? To make you want to stay with us?”

She shook her head. “It’s not that I don’t want to stay here. I do. I think maybe you three are my mates, even though I’m still wrapping my head around the idea. But with June all by herself—well, the light murdery people are probably the least of what we have to worry about. There are dangers and enemies in this school who aren’t killers. They are students.”

She stood and moved to get her jacket and put it on before sitting down to put those boots on. Gods, it was incredible to see those boots on her but damn it all, watching her put them on and zip them up her thighs made me want to do anything but let her go from this room or our suite.

“Did you just growl at me?” She stood and combed her fingers through her hair.

“I think I did,” I admitted.

“Us, too,” Blaze snickered, getting a punch from Cas in the arm.

“One minute you’re begging me to stay, and the next you’re growling. What the hell?”

I walked over to her and grasped the sides of her jacket at the zipper. “Forgive us, female. It was a possessive growl. You really know how to put on a pair of boots.”

Redness rushed to her cheeks and fanned out along her neck. “Oh. They’re not even my boots. They belong to June. She lent them to me.”

Cas came over and took her hand in his. “Somebody remind me to buy our mate some of those boots because I could watch that show for hours.” He leaned forward and kissed her temple, making her blush even more.

“Somebody want to walk me back to the room?” she asked.

“Me,” I answered before the others could. Even though the distance between our rooms was about the same length as our bedrooms, I didn’t want to waste a second where I could be with her. Plus, it would do my wolf good to see that she was safe.

I threw on a shirt and walked her to her room. She unlocked it and walked in, winking at me. “Text or call us, okay?”

She nodded and shut the door.

Damn it. I missed her already.
