I gasped. “You think they were killed?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know, but what I do know is that second wolves aren’t born of tragedy. They are born out of a desperate need for self-preservation. Night came out because you needed to be saved.”

Chapter Six

Blaze

“What’s up, bro-in-law?” Onyx answered Asher’s video chat. She’d shaved her head on one side, and she must’ve been ready to go into work at the Midnight because she had her magical makeup on.

“I’m calling for my check-in. Where’s Asher? Not that I don’t love our chats.” We had a good relationship. She and I and Raven texted more often than I talked to my own twin. They loved him fiercely, and I desperately wanted to be closer to them. I was missing so much.

“I’m here.” Asher lifted Onyx then sat down with her in his lap. “Finishing up the dishes.”

“I found my mate,” I blurted and waited for Asher to go on a tirade about how I should be focusing on my studies or being a good, obedient boy.

Onyx lit up immediately. “Blaze! I’m so happy for you! Who are they? Female? Male? Both? Neither?”

My twin’s mates were both female, and they were each other’s mates as well. “Her name is Karelis. She’s our mate. Me, Casimir, and Adan.” I snorted. “Ash, say something, man.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “I’m so damned happy for you. It took me by surprise, that’s all. Tell me about her.”

I wanted to tell both of them everything, but I wouldn’t divulge Karelis’ secrets unless we were all face-to-face. “She’s incredible. She came here because she was on the run from…someone. She tried to go to Urban Academy, but they thought she would be safer here, so she’s not a bad influence on me. I know you were thinking it, Asher.”

He chuckled, wrapping his arms around Onyx. “I was thinking no such thing. A mate or mates can turn your life upside down in the best way possible. When I found mine, it was the best day of my life.”

Onyx turned and, before I could speak another word, they were making out right there on the video. “Hey! I’m not here for the show.”

Onyx laughed and kissed him one more time. “I have to get to work anyway, brat. Text me later. I want to hear about that shifter anatomy class. I know you have a test tomorrow.”

“How do you know that?” Asher asked.

“Because we text with your brother all the time and keep up with him more than once a week. That’s how.”

Another kiss, and she was off after waving to me.

“Where’s Raven?” I asked, missing the little raincloud.

“Well, I’m actually glad you asked. We have some news of our own. Oh, there she is.” His attention was drawn off camera. Asher reached out his arms, and Raven sat in his lap, much like Onyx had. “You want to tell him, or should I?”

Raven blushed, a rare occasion. “Blaze, I’ve been feeling under the weather and having no energy.”

Asher beamed as she spoke. Seeing my brother happy meant everything to me. Him being happy made me happy. “So we took her to a healer, and Raven is pregnant.”

I stood up, knocking my phone over then sat down and righted it again with a yell. “That’s incredible! Congratulations!”

They laughed and shared a kiss. “It was a total surprise, but there were a few times we weren’t careful.”

“It only takes once,” I said in our mother’s tone.

“Oh my gods,” Raven said. “That’s exactly what your mom said. I hear you found your mate? And you didn’t tell me? Come on, dude, we text every day.”

Asher cocked his head. “Does everyone in my life text Blaze?”

She laughed and got up. “I need to eat and, yes, we all text Blaze because he’s the best. He needs to come to the Urban Academy and get out of the reject house. He doesn’t belong there.”

There was a long pause.

“Karelis doesn’t belong here, either,” I said. “And Cas and Adan have done their penance.”
