Chapter 1

Dominic

Ipulled on my shirt, wrapping the light blue Egyptian cotton around my shoulders that I had to admit were looking good. I laughed to myself. My best friends and business partners, Hugo, Logan, and Austin, were always trying to get me to the gym and initially, I would go there to humor them, but looks like our together time was paying off. I've never been so sculpted.

I twisted sideways as I did up the buttons of my shirt. My arm kept one side of my shirt up and yep, I actually had abs now. Don't get me wrong, I've never been overweight. I had a naturally slim build, but I guess you could have called me skinny-fat in the past. I'd rather sink my eyes into a medical journal than spend hours being a gym rat.

I sighed. But too much time in medical journals does not make a fun guy. Out of the four of us, I was probably the least chill guy. I had to keep my head in the game. Coming from East Boston, I dreamed of the wealth and possibilities I saw across the Boston Harbor. I remember sitting in the park at night, looking across the harbor, dreaming of where I could take my life.

And now here I am. Smack dab in the center of Boston. Partner in one of Boston's highest rated neurology clinics, along with my bros Austin, Hugo and Logan. Chair of the Fearless Foursome, or F2, investment club that has made all four of us richer than rich. A lot of it was luck. A few investments in some start-ups that went bonkers and shot our earnings to the stratosphere. And they say, once you make a million, it just keeps coming. And they weren't wrong.

I chuckled. Even with our playboy reputations, all of us were good boys. We spent a lot of our extra time dreaming about what good things we can do with our money. After all, you can only have so many houses, cars and vacations before it gets a little boring. That's how we came up with the F2 Foundation. We go do specialized surgeries in places with low access to our expertise. It started years ago with Austin heading over to Uganda and the good work has continued with all of us getting to do our trips at least once a year. My last trip to Costa Rica was mind-blowing and life changing. Not only for my patients, but for me as well. I will never forget the people I met.

I'm also the numbers guy of the group. If I didn't become a doctor, I was going to be in finance. That was the other way I could envision jumping over to the other side of the Harbor. But medicine called. Brains called. And here I am.

After a quick cup of coffee, I grabbed a light jacket and headed out for the short walk to the clinic. Living downtown Boston was a dream for me. I bought a condo in one of the most modern buildings that just happened to be within walking distance to the clinic. Loved the time it gave me to get mentally ready for work and also leave work behind every day.

"Dom!" I looked back and saw Austin jogging to catch up to me. He lived a short distance away in a townhouse bordering the Charles River.

"Hey", I replied. A bro-hug sealed the deal.

"How's it going, Dom? I haven't seen you for a couple of days."

"Yeah, I had that Larson surgery last week."

"Oh shit, yeah." All of us knew about the big cases. We would sit down at least once a week to discuss the big ones. We needed the sounding board to make sure no stone was left unturned. Brains were delicate objects. "How did that go? You used that new surgical mesh with that one."

I smiled that he remembered the details. "Yeah. It went well. The manufacturer sponsored the entire supply. Just have to give them a mention in the paper we're going to write."

"Anything to further the cause, right?" Austin beamed. We loved doing things that were on the leading edge of what we knew as a medical community, along with what were more basic procedures. It was exciting to help advance neurology as a whole, and our clinic was among the ones constantly pushing the envelope.

We walked up to the corner vegetable and fruit stand.

"Hold on. I need to get some fruit." I casually walked into the store, picking up some apples and a bunch of bananas. We liked to have fresh fruit available at the clinic to encourage healthy snacking among the staff. Austin followed a few steps behind me.

The young girl at the cash register handed my change and passed me the bag of fruit.

"Thank you," I nodded in her direction.

When we got outside, Austin's elbow hit me sharply in the side.

"Ow! What the hell?" I cried out.

"Dom the Dominator! Dom the heartbreaker! Little Dom is growing wings!"

I stopped in my tracks and looked at him with a confused look on my face.

"Again… what the hell?!?"

"Didn't you see that smitten woman at the fruit store? She was speechless, she was drooling so hard."

"What are you talking about?"

Austin collapsed with emphasized disbelief. "Don't tell me you didn't see that, Mr. Oblivious!"

"I didn't see that. I didn't see anything other than I was getting some fucking fruit."

"Oh my god, Dom. Get your head out of your brain and remove your blinders once in a while, man. That girl was hot for you! She was blushing redder than a matador's red cape thing."
