I turned around and told him the story. I loved how attentive he was as he listened to my every word as he continued to caress me.

"Your mom sounds like a wise woman."

"She is. I can't wait for you to meet each other."

"And your dad sounds a little like me." I laughed.

"I sure hope not. But he's getting better. I don't think you're like my dad at all." I kissed him on the nose. "And thank God for that." We laughed.

He reached over to kiss me again. He cupped my cheek with his hand.

"I want to love you forever, Calla."

"So, does that mean we're back together?"

"If you want to be. If you'll take me back after I was such a doorknob."

"But you were such a sweet doorknob."

I cupped his cheek and went in for another kiss.

"But yes, I want to be back together. And I promise to try to be more understanding of your work pressures."

"You know, you already are. And I think it's time for me to put more attention on you than on work. Work will have its time in the day, but I want you to know that you're a priority to me. I don't ever want you to feel like you're secondary to anything."

I smiled. Although I didn't know whether I could ever expect that to be true with Dr. Dominic Harrington, just him saying it was enough.

"I love you, Dom."

"I love you, Cal."

And then, after a few minutes, he murmured, "Are you ready for round two?"

Let's just say we had a very busy night that included a lot of moaning, groaning, gasping, and, yes, giggling. It was the night I was hoping to have.

Come to think of it, we never got around to making at that cod…

Epilogue: Six months later

Dominic

Everything at the clinic was humming along. Our patient schedules had remained busy, and everyone had settled in well to their roles. Calla was working like a crazy woman, but she seemed to really enjoy her work. She was doing a great job with our social media accounts, and we were getting more requests from media and other outlets, asking if they could showcase our work.

Showcasing us as individuals was never the objective, but we were always happy to talk about what we were doing with the foundation.

Karen had kept in close touch with Khadija. All the patients we had operated on were recovering well. Some of them were outpatients, only coming to the hospital to receive physiotherapy, but a couple remained in the hospital to ensure their full recovery. It was a huge comfort to me that we could create value in these people's lives. They were so deserving.

Little Abdi was now living almost seizure free. We were able to see him and his mother on a video chat, facilitated by Khadija, and his smile was enough to keep me going for the rest of my life. His mother had tears of joy when she spoke to us and that was really touching.

Serena helped us create structure and space on our missions to include the teaching of medical staff in the different locations we went to. It was important that they didn't rush into doing complicated surgeries. First things first. But it became clear to us that there was value in going to the same countries year after year so that we could build on the knowledge we were sharing. And where we could, we could sponsor a medical professional to shadow us here in Boston.

Looking back, it was great to see our evolution. From just a seed of an idea to what it was growing into. Who knew what it would become? All I knew was that everyone was fully on board with the work we did, and it brought our team closer than ever.

As for me and Calla, everything was great. I asked her to move in with me, but she had good reasons not to. She wanted to have her own space with her sister, and make sure she didn't lose that connection. I had a suspicion that she didn't want to desert Cassie so that she would have to pay all the rent. Truth be told, Calla had a key to my place, stayed over a night here and there and most weekends, so I think we both got what we wanted.

As for the future? Who knows what it will bring?

I'm just going to let it unfold.
