What's new?

Not much. Doing the same old thing. Being a doctor makes me a dull man.

Right. I bet you have women pounding on your door. I saw that magazine article about you and your friends. "Hottest neurologists in the country"? Nice photo, bro.

I chuckled. It was true that our appointments had increased once the article in Medical Inc. appeared a few months ago. But I attribute that to the good looks of my colleagues. I am the quiet one with non-remarkable features. No one can compete with Austin's blond hair, Hugo's Italian accent, or Logan's kind eyes.

Thanks. It was a weird article.

Well, only in your nerd recollection, I'm sure. Got a few of my friends swooning.

I rolled my eyes.

Alright, alright. What's new with you?

Nothing much. I'm on the dating scene but no one special yet. I'd better hurry up though. Not getting any younger. Which, is an even bigger deal for you…LOL How about you? How's your romantic life?

Nothing to report. Guys are telling me to get with the program. I'll see.

Yeah, let go a little. Have you tried online? It's changed. You can actually get good matches on there now, not just a hook-up.

I sighed.

No, not yet. Maybe I'll give it a go. You're not the first one to suggest it.

Yeah, do it. And I want the full report. Gotta run. Hope I see you at Mom's next weekend! Love ya.

I'll see you there. Love you too.

Mom lived in New London, Connecticut. A drive for me, but a flight for Vic. It was her birthday next week and Vic and I decided to meet there to surprise her. Well, a half-surprise. Vic told her she was coming, but I haven't said a word. I knew Mom wouldn't question me either because she knows I'm busy. It's going to be a nice time. Reconnect with Vic and Mom. It will be like the good ol' days.

But now, I have to refocus on the task at hand. Numbers and more numbers. Who am I kidding? Calla and more Calla.

Fuck.

Chapter 6

Calla

Isat at my desk, the soft glow of the computer screen casting a dim light across the room. My fingers tapped restlessly on the pristine surface, the rhythmic sound echoing through the quiet space. I had been anxiously checking my email for days, waiting for any news about the job applications I'd submitted.

"Come on," I muttered under my breath, impatiently hitting the refresh button one more time. "Give me something.

As if in answer to my plea, a new message appeared in my inbox. The subject line read "Interview Invitation" and my heart leaped into my throat. I clicked on it, trying to steady my trembling hands as I read the contents.

"Dear Ms. Rosewood," the email began, "We are pleased to inform you that your application for the Office Manager position has caught our attention. We would like to invite you for an interview at the client's main office..."

"Holy shit," I whispered, staring wide-eyed at the screen. This was it. The opportunity I'd been waiting for, the chance to prove myself and move forward in my career. The excitement bubbled up inside me, threatening to burst forth like a champagne cork.

"I need to tell someone!" I exclaimed, quickly opening a new tab and typing out a message to Ava and Cassie who were out living their lives while I obsessed about my career back at home. They had supported me throughout my job search, and I couldn't wait to share this incredible news with them.

Hey, you won't believe it… I just got an interview to be an office manager!

Ava

Yay!

Cassie
