CHAPTER FIFTEEN
I’m twenty minutes from the apartment and feeling eager to see Simona when my cell phone rings.
“Scotch. Where are you?”
“Hey, Will, halfway between Eden and Park City. What’s up?”
“Does your girl have a thing for running around half naked with a gun?”
“Fuck. Did you see something on a security camera?”
“Yeah. Something weird as hell.”
I mash the accelerator on my Tahoe to the floor. “Spit it out.”
“Someone knocked on the door, set off the camera on the outside, then the camera on the inside turned on. A blonde chic was pointing a pistol at the door.”
“Son of a bitch!” I bellow in the phone. “What happened? Who was at the door? Did she open the door?”
“No, she didn’t. The guy left after a few minutes. He was wearing a blue uniform that I didn’t recognize, and… he had on gloves.”
My heart jolts, then tries to choke me.
“God! Who wears fucking gloves when it’s fifty degrees out?”
Will huffs and I know he’s not telling me everything. “Scotch. She climbed out the window… I saw her on the building cam. I hacked into the complex security system a few months ago. So, I decided to check things out to see if anything else was up. That’s when I saw her running across the lawn in a tactical stance, gun drawn.”
I swerve around a slow ass Cadillac. “Dammit! I gotta go. Call me if you see anything else.”
As soon as the call disconnects, I dial Simona. The line goes right to voicemail.
“Simona. Call me. I know you left the apartment. I’ll help you. Call me!"
I furiously look in my contacts for Marshall. He answers on the first ring.
“Simona’s on the run. Injured. Spooked by something.”
“When?”
I relay the story. When I’m done, he sounds grim. “She’s going to be hard to find.”
“You don’t have to tell me that. I already have a feel for her.”
“Does she trust you?”
“I thought she did.”
He sighs. “Does she have a way to reach you?”
“She’s got my number. But she may reach out to you.”
