‘I’m holding you to that, because I refuse to lose you here.’ I admit as I revamp the shield around him. ‘Can you at least tell me if this shield is helping at all?’

‘It is. It feels like a warm hug, and it’s probably the only thing that’s keeping me from deteriorating as fast as Steinbeck gave me,’ he reveals.

‘It’s a good thing I don’t always follow doctor’s orders,’ I say before kissing him and sending up a quick prayer for the Fates to bless him.

With Knots’ condition in the front of my mind, we continue on for another hour until I feel a weird sensation that I’ve felt in the past and pause. “What’s wrong, ma chérie?” JP asks, rubbing my shoulder.

“I—It’s hard to explain it,” I start.

“Shit,” Knox says. “Let me take point.” Knox switches places with JP and glances at my face. “You feeling a premonition, kitten?” he asks.

“Is that what it is?” I ask with a scowl.

“It’s what I’m calling it. Feels like something is going to happen, like that day we were flying in the woods?” he pushes, and I nod.

“Okay, I’ll take point. Be ready to pull your weapons. Remember, we left our allies behind. All that training we just went through is gonna come in handy now; it’s about to get real,” Knox says.

He drops to all fours and in his place is… I don’t know what appears, but it looks lethal. I can only assume it is Slayer, his new form. By the gasps from a few of the guys, they have no idea what he is either, and I would wager a bet that they didn’t even know about this new development.

‘Hey, gorgeous!’ The bat faced, long-ass leopard thing turns his head and winks at me. ‘Now you get to see a big boy play properly.’

“Are my eyes going weird, or does Knox have six legs?” Lynx asks. I check, and sure enough, he’s right.

“Nope, your eyes are fine, but did you see the five-foot tentacles from hell reaching above us with fish-hooks dangling out of him?” Zeke responds. I peer up and gasp at the sight.

“Aww shit. Whatever he is, it’s the rarest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s never been mentioned in any of the mythical creature books that I’ve read in the past,” Ryker says in awe.

“Well, remember what Knox said, get your weapons ready,” Levi reminds us.

I pull my glaives free but don’t activate them as I follow behind Slayer.

We quickly follow the tunnel until we come to a fork. To the left, I see stairs leading up, and to the right the tunnel continues on. I squat down close to Reaper to look at the map.

“Guys, I think this is Lilith’s house. Right here are the stairs, and if this is correct, that”—I point to the right—“should be the tunnel we would have went down in the first place.”

“Okay.” Knots nods, and I take stock that his voice sounds stronger but he’s still using the wall to rest against. “Let’s go.” I stand up, and we start to move when the floor above us rumbles and dirt begins to fall.

“What the—”

“Shh…” Lynx says. “I think I hear someone.”

‘Rezzi, push Reaper behind the stairs. We need to dim his light, just in case.’

Without question, I pull Reaper behind the stairs with me and stand in front of him, trying to hide his flames. Lynx waves for everyone else to spread out, and I lean around to see what’s going on. Stepping on a loose rock, I lose my balance and fall against the staircase. That’s when I feel the vibrations.

‘Shit! Lynx! People are coming down the stairs!!’ I scream at him.

‘Okay, Rez; I’m shifting,’ he calls back.

‘Slayer, Demons are coming,’ I warn.

‘Good,’ he purrs back.

“The tunnel is so old they probably forgot about it,” a voice calls out, and laughter follows. It sounds like more than just a few people. I quickly wipe my hands off on my pants before gripping my glaives again.

“Pompous assholes.”

“What about the other ones? The ones spotted with L.A.M.B.?”
