“Do you want to talk about what happ—?”

Her soft lips swallowed his words as she pinned him against the door. It was a demanding kiss that lit an instant fire in the center of his stomach. His desire pushed away any prior thought, flaring down to his groin and urging him to grab her.

She was the only woman that left him this hungry. That made him so hard he feared he might burst out of his clothes. The need to savor all of her flooded his mind.

He skimmed one hand down her body, over the curve of her breast, allowing it to settle in the center of her spine. He loved the play of her muscles underneath the fabric of her shirt. His other hand cradled the back of her neck as he devoured her lips. Her skin burned with a feverish heat. The nagging feeling that they needed to communicate about what had happened remained.

It was hard to forget his fear of losing her. What if she later decided she hadn’t truly forgiven him? “H-hey.” He pulled away between kisses. “We should talk.”

“No. Talking.” She pushed his coat off his shoulders and let her hands trace his pecs, making him tremble with need.

“But…”

“Gavin, I want you,” she pleaded, still close enough that the warmth of her breath hit his well-kissed lips. “I need to feel good and make love to you without having to worry about everything else.”

Damn, how could he deny her that?

She unlaced her white shirt, revealing the sheer layer of her chemise underneath which did little to hide her bare flesh. Then she pulled down her pants and stood naked—except for that delicious scrap of paper-thin fabric—in front of him.

Gavin’s lips crashed into hers, and he was no longer holding back. Their tongues clashed in an urgent dance that took the desire that simmered under his skin and turned it into a raging fire. Violet dug her fingers into his hair as he picked her up swiftly, both hands beneath her ass. She wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed down the column of his throat.

He sat on the bed as she made swift work of removing his shirt and untied the strings of his pants. He let her ride him after. She smelled like everything he wanted, sweet, sexy, and his.

After a while, the intensity and need in her movements slowed as she looked him straight in the eye and dragged her finger over his jaw and mouth. His hands settled on the curve of her waist.

“I love you, Gavin,” she said, and his heart thundered at her words. “I’m yours, angry and broken as I might be… for as long as I have.”

“Shh,” he whispered against her lips, swallowing the bitter taste of panic that flooded him. “No one is ever taking you from me.”

She rolled her hips, and his cock slid deeper inside her. He took control of her movements, enjoying the warmth of her body as it received him.

They rocked into each other, again and again, until the bed screeched over the floor, and hit the wall with soft thumps. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, and he burned with the need to touch every inch of her with his lips and tongue. Euphoria drove him to the brink. Her moans deepened as he flipped them over and pushed her into the mattress with more force. He kissed her soundly as she shivered underneath him. His pleasure almost brought him down as he struggled to not fall over the precipice.

But Violet didn’t pull away when his rhythm stumbled. Nor did she push him away like she’d done the first time they’d made love. Her eyes blazed with defiance, but Gavin knew in the back of his heated mind that he couldn’t come inside her. Even though he craved it like nothing else in this world.

He groaned, and his legs trembled as euphoria made his vision gray at the edges. He barely managed to pull out of her before his orgasm hit him and emptied himself over the apex of her thighs. That alone was hot enough that he wanted to do it again.

Then he collapsed on top of her.

“You’re heavy.” She grunted and attempted to push him away. He would not make it easy on her, either. Instead, he burrowed his nose in the crook of her neck and grinned against her skin when she squirmed under him. Who knew she would be so ticklish?

“I like it here. You aren’t comfortable per se, but I enjoy being on top of you.” His hands dragged over her sides, slipping under her hips and giving her ass a thorough squeeze. “I love these. I would love to try it from the back, next time.”

She pushed him off her with all her might. “Who says there will be a next time?”

“Please,” he huffed, a smile spreading over his face. “You jumped me at the door. I predict you’ll be begging me to take you from behind later tonight.”

“Shut up.” She cuddled up next to him, and he enjoyed the peaceful quiet that followed. His body was tired and ached all over. It was almost shocking that he was still intact after the trip, Julius’ betrayal, and the constant healing of others—and himself. Still, even though life had been far from easy as of late, there was nowhere else he’d rather be right now.

A sob broke through the distant thunder of the waves. Violet’s shoulders were quaking as she finally gave in to her grief. His stomach clenched at the sound, and for a moment he wasn’t sure what to do.

Then she drew closer to him, and it was enough of a signal that he enveloped her inside his arms, tracing soft patterns over her spine. “I’m sorry this happened,” he repeated.

There were so many things he couldn’t—wouldn’t voice. Like all the things that had happened to her with her assembly, Julius, and her dad. But he wanted to say something—anything to make her feel better.

This time she didn’t claim she was fine. Instead, she simply let him hold her until there were no more tears to shed.

“I drooled all over you,” she said eventually, wiping her hands over the slobbery mess that was his chest.
