Before he’s even finished speaking, I’m rushing towards the exit. But the sound of panicked yells brings me crashing to a stop.

“Hurry!” someone screams. “She’s going into cardiac arrest?—”

“We’re losing her?—”

“Fuck!”

My head is pounding with worry. Every heartbeat throbs and aches. A heavy sense of failure hangs over me like a flock of vultures, just waiting for me to give up so they can come down to pick at what’s left of my bones.

First, I lost Elena.

Then I lost Wren.

And now, I’m losing Bee.

And here I am—caught in the middle, drenched in blood, surrounded by death. My hands are tangled and the chains are pulling me in every direction. Soon enough, they’ll tear me to pieces.
