We get to the golf cart, –the main mode of transportation at Calling Wood– and I slide into my seat while Beth takes the wheel, starting our short journey to the school. The whole way there I talk Beth’s ear off.

I’m all smiles and butterflies as I walk the halls, waving to everyone who looks my way. I don’t care if I look weird or overly friendly, I’m in a really good mood today.

In class, I sit next to an omega who looks like he would rather be anywhere but here. The teacher calls his name a few times, Spencer it is, but he sleeps through most of the lesson. The poor guy looks like he’s having a hard time.

By the time lunch hits, I’m filled with nervous excitement to meet my first pack. “Hello.” I wave as I step up to the table.

“Hello, indeed.” The alpha with short brown hair gives me a sly smile. “Aren’t you a pretty little thing? Sit. Let’s talk.”

I’m not a fan of how the word sit sounds so much like an alpha bark, but I keep a friendly smile on my face and take a seat next to the alpha with long blond hair on the other side of the table.

“I’m Willow.” I keep my lips curved up in a smile, but my stomach drops when I feel everyone's attention on me. This is something I’m not used to.

I’m starting to realize that I’m sitting at a table with five alphas. Five strange alphas that I’ve never met before. Since I’ve left home, I’ve talked to all of one alpha. Maybe I’m in over my head.

But I don’t want to bail too soon, I need to give it some time. So, I take a deep breath and talk.

For the next fifteen minutes, I get introduced to all of them and things seem to be going okay. I’ve relaxed a little bit and even given a few genuine laughs and smiles.

“I’m thinking five kids,” Rob, the short brown-haired alpha says.

“I agree. One for each of us,” Tim, the blond alpha adds.

“We can start trying right away. I don’t see any reason to wait,” Nick, a redhead alpha comments.

Wait. What? Start trying for babies. What the fuck? “Hold on. I’m sorry, what are you all talking about?”

Rob looks at me and grins. “Your heat is soon, right?”

“Yes,” I answer slowly, my eyes flicking around to all the alphas.

“It’s the perfect time. We can spend the next few weeks getting to know each other, then when your heat comes, we can see where things go.”

I blink at him, dumbfounded. “You're joking, right?”

He frowns, not liking my reaction. “No. Why would I be?”

Yeah, okay, we're done here. This pack is not meant to be anything to me, let alone a temporary pack. “I’m sorry, we must have had a miscommunication here. I signed up for the program with the hope of finding a temporary pack to help me through my heats. I’m not looking for anything more, at least not anytime soon.”

“We know that you were looking for a temp pack, but we were hoping that once you met with us, you would change your mind.” Rob reaches out to touch my face, but I stand up quickly.

“So you knew what my request was, disregarded it, and thought you could convince me of something else? All so you can get what you want?” My eyes narrow and my eyebrows furrow as anger fills me.

“Oh, the little omega is mad,” Matt, the one with black hair, chuckles, and I shoot him a death glare.

“Relax,” Rob growls. “You're making a big deal over nothing. God, omegas, and their oversensitivity to everything is annoying. Look, you're an omega. Having babies and taking care of your alphas is in your DNA. Please don’t tell me you're like some of these freak omegas around here who are all ‘I am woman hear me roar’.” He rolls his eyes, it’s taking everything in me not to take the butter knife on his plate and stab him in the hand with it.

“Oh, like that one omega we met with a few years ago. What was her name? Tina?” Matt snorts out a laugh.

“Nah, it was Tia. She’s with that pack of loser alphas,” Tim chuckles.

“Bunch of freaks.” Rob shakes his head.

“We’re done here,” I state, stepping away, not wanting to hear another word from them. What a bunch of assholes.

It puts a damper on my mood for the rest of the day.

The next few days I meet with pack after pack, and while they are not as big of dickheads as the first pack I met, they don’t seem to be on the same page as me.
