“You know you won’t get away with this,” I whisper to her. I want her to know that she won’t survive this no matter what happens to me.

She just smiles at me and crap if that isn’t the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. She draws her finger down my face, “Oh, Suri. It doesn’t matter what happens to me. You won’t be making it out of here and that’s payment enough. You never should have defied me.”

“What about my dad?” I ask with a voice that’s stronger than I feel at the moment.

“Richard? He was a pawn from the beginning. I’ve been playing the long game. You see, Suri, I’m a member of a group of people who are tired of the O’Sullivans and how they rule everything. I couldn’t get to them through their organization but I could use their allies against them. That’s where you and your dad come in. It was so easy. Your dad needed someone to be his partner. I gained his trust over the years, convincing him that I loved him. He never expected the person he married to betray him. Such arrogance. When I brought the idea of your marriage to him, he jumped on it so quickly. But you had to ruin it, didn’t you? Don’t worry though, I will fix everything. I can bring the O’Sullivans to their knees through you. Granted it might not be the way I thought, but this might be even better.”

I just stare at her as she talks. I can’t believe she used my dad like this. Tears slide down my cheeks. Mallory grabs my face. “Don’t worry, little Suri, you don’t need to cry. It will be all over soon.”

Despite what Mallory thinks, I’m not crying for myself. I’m crying for how devastated my dad will be when he finds out. The witch is showing her real colors now. The rest of my tears are for Brendan, the man I love. We won’t get to have our life together. It’s over before it ever started. He must be going insane trying to find me.

Done talking, she pushes me almost causing my chair to fall backwards. She looks at me with nothing but disgust. “Goodbye, Suri. If you were a good girl, maybe this could’ve ended differently. Maybe we could have been allies. But you let puppy love ruin everything. I’ll get Brendan too, don’t worry.”

“You leave him alone, you bitch!” I scream as she closes the door.

Chapter sixteen

Brendan

“Suri!” I scream into the phone.

This can’t be happening. I wince as I hear her breathing into the phone, but she doesn’t make a sound. The sound of metal crunching and then the glass breaking comes through the phone and I know what is going on, she has been hit. My heart is beating faster and faster. I smash my hands to my head. Think Brendan…think.

I pull my phone out and call Henry. “She’s hurt,” I rush out as soon as he picks up.

“Brendan, what do you mean?”

“Suri, I was on the phone with her. Then I heard her screaming and the car crashing.”

“Man, you need to calm down. Did you check her location?”

I switch to the tracking app and check her location. The dot shows that she is out in the middle of nowhere, nowhere close to the penthouse. “Fuck, why is she out there?”

“Brendan, where is she?”

“I’ll send you her location. Meet me there.”

Grabbing my keys off of the counter, I head toward the elevator. When the doors open, I go straight to my car. I drive like a madman to her last location.

“Get the fuck out of my way!” Goddammit, I’m yelling at every car on the road. If I don’t get pulled over, it will be a miracle. Do I care about a ticket…fuck no! I heard her scream my name. I heard the glass and the crunching of the metal.

What the fuck happened? I need to get to her and make sure she’s okay. I keep checking the dot on her phone. I see her location, she’s not moving. I’m only five minutes out and it’s feeling like fucking five hours.

She’s okay. She has to be okay.

Approaching her location, I slam on brakes and skid to a stop. Flying out of the car, I scream at the top of my lungs, “Suri!”

Henry pulls up shortly after me. When he flings himself from the car, he rushes straight for me. “Brendan, why did I just fucking get a call saying that you were exiled?”

I turn towards him, answering him with one word, “Suri,”

With a look of understanding, he turns and moves toward the wreckage.

I’m lucky to have Henry in my life. Someone so loyal that even my exile doesn’t stop him from helping. A real brother.

We both stand there taking in the scene. Henry speaks first.

“Fuck, what the hell happen?”
