“You know I’m in.”

The smile that takes over his face is so genuine and so happy that I shouldn’t be surprised when he leans in close to my ear and asks me, “Will you marry me?”

Jerking back, he keeps his hand firmly on my back so we’re anchored together, but his smile now is a mixture of mischievous and nervousness.

“What?”

“You heard me,” he says, as his thumb swipes back and forth, dragging the satin-like material across my skin.

“This again?” I smile at him, thinking he’s teasing just like all the other times.

“Goldie, I’m serious. Marry me.”

I watch him as he watches me. His eyes roam over my face like I’m so beloved and cherished by him that it causes a lump to rise in my throat.

“But . . . we haven’t been together that long.”

“So?”

“What do you mean so? Shouldn’t we be together for like a year or something first?” I ask him.

“What do you not know about me that you think you need a year to learn?”

“I don’t know, that’s the whole point. Umm, are you up to date on your taxes?”

He throws his head back and laughs. It draws attention to us, but he doesn’t care.

“Taxes?”

“Well, yeah. Those are important.”

“Definitely important for the eldest son of the owner of the largest private equity firm in the state.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Come on, Goldie, what else?” His nerves have vanished, and the confidence he always wears shines through. I love it when he feels larger than life. I love it because he’s mine.

“You’ve never been to one of my concerts. You may decide you don’t like what I do.”

Briggs’s face drops, and he gives me one of those looks. You know, the kind that says, “Really?” as well as, “I’m going to put you over my knee for that statement.”

Yes, please.

“Well, you never know.” I shrug.

“You’re wrong. I do know. I know that you are the person for me. There will never be anyone but you. Are there things we still need to learn about each other? Yes. But I think that’s exciting, and I hope to be lucky enough to learn things about you for the rest of my life.”

“That was really sweet.”

“I’m a sweet guy.” He grins.

“So what, you propose and then we run off to Italy and get married?”

“If you’re asking, then my answer is yes.”

“Briggs.”

“Goldie.”
