I wasn't leaving here until I got what I came for.

"Hmm." Stephen made a sound at the back of his throat. "Did she tell you that your career would end if you touched a strand of hair on her head?"

I decided to keep to myself that I'd done more than that. There was no need to disturb the man.

"Once or twice, yes,” I said instead.

"And you still decided to do so?"

"I love her."

"Does she love you?"

I almost said yes. Almost. But did she really? There was a wall between Felicity and me, albeit cracked. Yes, there were times when I could reach in through the crack and touch her, but it didn't change the fact that the barrier was still standing.

I let my gaze drop. "I'm not sure."

"Hmm. That sounds very much to me like she doesn't."

His smug tone annoyed me, but I didn't let it show.

I lifted my head to meet his eyes. "She's guarded."

"For good reason," he scowled. "Do you know about her past?"

"Yes."

He narrowed his eyes. "And?"

I matched the intensity of his stare. "And what?"

I wasn't here for games. If he had something to say, then he should stop fucking around and say it.

"Listen here, boy—"

"The name's Aaron, sir." I fixed him with a sweet smile. "But I'm sure you already knew that."

He blinked, once, twice, before throwing his head back and letting out a bark of laughter. I stayed quiet until he was done.

Stephen's laughter gradually dissipated into rasp chuckles as he fixed his gaze on me. "Alright then, Aaron. I'm a very powerful man and extremely protective of my daughter. Now, you say you are aware of her past. What are your intentions toward her?"

"I would like to court her, sir."

A look of surprise crossed his face. "Even with the knowledge of what happened?"

"Especially with the knowledge of what happened."

He blinked. "Why?"

"As I said, I love her. She deserves to know she’s loved. Besides, everything that happened wasn't her fault."

An awkward silence ensued. I could practically see the gears in his head running, and for a moment, I thought he would ask me to get out.

But then he leaned forward, his eyes full of confusion and distrust. "And how did you come to that conclusion?"

"We all make mistakes. It doesn't have to define us," I said. "She was young and wanted love. And since you weren't there to give it to her, she found it somewhere else."

He gawked. "I wasn't there to love her? What the fuck are you talking about, boy?"
